With this deal if I were to buy a phone and get the second one for "free" can I give that to my sister? How does it work exactly?

Both lines have to be in your name, and you need to have two upgrades (or new activations, or combo) to use it. Both phones must be activated with the smartphone data plan.
This deal is if you're on a family plan and want 2 smartphones, this lowers the upfront cost for you.
It's not a "free" phone that you can keep as a spare or give to someone else.
...
That is not entirely true, I work for Verizon, how it works is you purchase any phone of your choice (the most expensive sets the bar, obviously) and it can be for either upgrade or activation, but the second free phone is for activation only. You can't buy one get one free for ony two upgrades, it can be either two activations or one upgrade and a new activation. The data plan is irrelivant.

Then you don't work for Verizon (most likely a retailer with different rules)
Both activations need a data plan, but it can be 2 new, two upgrades, or one of each

I agree with Menno, you must work for an authorized retailer, or if you work for an actual Verizon Wireless owned and operated store, you need to go back to training.
Corporate stores, telesales, or online sales (meaning, FROM VERIZON, not from someone selling Verizon): BOGO can be done as an upgrade OR a new line activation, or any combination of the two.
Many (not all) Authorized Retailers (AKA indirect stores) are paid differently depending on the type of activation (new or upgrade), and do not usually receive credits for BOGO phones (meaning they eat the extra $200 or so), so to pay for their own in-house BOGO deals, they need to make enough money to justify the discount, namely, they want a new line activation because it usually p...

I'm indirect and I also do it this way in my store. In years past we weren't paid the spiffs on upgrades so we couldn't, today all spiffs are paid on upgrades and new activations the same so it makes it a lot easier to do these deals.
...
I am elegible for an upgrade and according to telesales the BOGO deal apparently can only work if I have a family plan with 2 lines....I couldn't upgrade my phone and get the second phone to activate only....Now my sister is on a family plan for her, her husband and son. Can she do the upgrade BOGO and give me the free phone to activate on my line? If after all what your saying is true this should be possible?
...
Technically, if she has two upgrades this deal would work. But you'd have to convince your sister to use an upgrade (thus extending her contract) and then not get the phone to go with that upgrade.

You need to have two lines upgrading/activating or some combo of the two on the SAME account. are two of her lines able to upgrade?
Additionally, depending on where you sister upgrades, there could be a penalty if the phone is taken off the account before 6 months (this is done because Verizon doesn't pay out spiffs or commissions until the line is active for 6 months)
A bogo deal only works with 2 lines, you don't "Buy one, get one as a spare"
If your sister did that, she would be upgrading 2 lines (locking them both into contract) but only getting one phone because you would get the other.
...
Well this is out of the question. She is not available for anything but an early upgrade. So I guess I have to stick it out longer. It sucks not being employed cause I can't buy anything, especially a new phone which is what I need

Don't give him too hard of a time.. took me over 6 months to get another full time position.
If you're in sales/marketing (at least around here) it's hard finding a new job. I have too much education for entry level stuff, and too little experience for the things hiring.
Took a huge pay cut to get a job where I'm at now, but it pays the bills, and there is a chance for advancement, so I'll take what I can get.
How are you? You disappeared for a bit.

I hope it doesn't come across as giving him a hard time. Sparker is one of the few who have my email address and occasionally email/IM me (you're another Menno). I respect him immensely for holding out this long. He's been itching for something new the entire year, if not longer. When he gets a phone I'm not sure that I'll believe him at first.
If anything, he deserves props for sticking with that Voyager this long (it IS still a Vger, right?)
I'm well. I got tired of the conversation constantly turning into another "when is Verizon getting iPhone" thread.
I'll email you about what's been going on out my way.

That's good. Not all indirects are like that (hence my many - not all comment). None in my area are like that, unfortunately. It's the FAIR way to do it. When I started in the business, upgrades were 20% of your total sales. Now they're 80%.
