The inevitable question about whether Verizon will network the iPhone popped up. "This is one of those things that rolls out every few weeks," McAdam responded, "whether or not there is a basis for it or not."

So how about either answering the question directly or issuing a no comment rather than rambling on like a garrulous old geezer.

If an iphone IS coming, he's under a NDA not to announce it before a certain date.

If it ISN'T coming, saying it's not could cool any relationship the company has with apple and potentially set back talks. Not to mention that NO ONE would believe him if he said it wasn't coming anyway. They would just write it off as "he can't say anything" like conspiracy theorists who justify the existance of area 51 because the government DOESN'T admit to having it.

What's stupid is that a member of the press waisted their question on something they KNEW he couldn't respond to.

I KNOW he cannot respond. Nor should he. The proper response would have been an icy stare followed by a gruff "Next question!" Or "No comment!" This is also what athletes like Terrell Owens or Gilbert Arenas should do rather than overloading their *Bleeps* by thinking out loud to the media.
