Personal Data Plan vs Corporate Data Plan

For years I have carried around a personal phone and a work Blackberry. My employer recently made available the option of dumping the Blackberry and using my personal Droid Incredible to receive work email through an app from Good Technology. I jumped at the chance to carry one device and one set of chargers. Because I will be using a personal device to complete business, my company will reimburse me for a portion of my bill. To set-up the service from Good Technology I had to upgrade my data plan from $30 to $45. What difference, if any, will I notice in this data plan upgrade? Why does VZW charge more for corporate data? The $30 plan was already unlimited, so I can't imagine I will notice any difference. Fortunately my corporate discount is 20%, so the out of pocket amount is $36, and the reimbursement my employer will provide more than covers the increased expense of upgrading the data plan.

It's because you're using a sync server. the extra cost per month allows your company to link your phone up to a secure network, allowing you to sync corporate address books, calendars, etc. It also allows your company to lock or wipe your device remotely since you have propriatery information on it from them.

The extra cost per month allows you to connect to that network and allows the company greater control over your device. It doesn't add more data.

There is NO WAY that I would give my employer control over my personal device. I think this guy is blinded by greed. When they start asking him why he is surfing You Porn while at work he will rue the day.

Then you won't be able to get corporate email to your devices. This is because you have sensative info for the company on the device

This is set up by companies, not by Verizon.

Often if you have this requirement the company has to pay you the difference in cost.

So this is not a whine just a curious question? You will not notice any difference. It simply is that VZW does not allow the Good Sync on the $29.99 plan just as they do not allow Blackberry Enterprise or Wireless Sync on the Unlimited Email and Web plan. Frankly, you are looking at this the wrong way (just in case this IS a whine). As a former employee and VZW hater in general I would point out that back in the olden days EVERYONE paid $44.99 for data personal or otherwise. The $29.99 data plans are a concession of sorts by those greedy *Bleeps*. So if your complaint is why not one price for data it would likely be a $15 increase for those with the Unlimited Email and Web plan rather than a decrease for corporate users.

My question was not a complaint or a whine. I am just curious if I will notice anything different with the data plan change. It sounds like I should notice no changes.

It is also my understanding that I am not conceding control of my entire personal device to my employer, but my employer will have total control of the Good Technology app.

I am actually excited that I no longer have to carry 2 phones and chargers. There will also be a bit of $ windfall for me because the reimbursement I get greatly exceeds the added expense of the new data plan.

yes, they will just have control over the items they place on your phone. They can't "spy" on you
