Android and more specifically Fascinate SMS question
Anyone know how to turn off the sms notification bar (so the message doesn't display on the status bar) BUT still allows an audible alert when messages arrive?
If this can only be done by using an app to do text messages any recommendations on a good one?
Thanks

I can't find a way to do this on my Fascinate. Perhaps a 3rd party SMS app would allow greater control over the SMS notices?
I've switched all my SMS usage over to Google Talk and Google Voice, though, so the only true SMS I ever get are my CNN alerts anymore, so I haven't really bothered to look into SMS apps, personally.

From what I can see there isn't a way. I even checked in ChompSMS which I use. It looks like notifications are either on or off. If they're on then the notification icon at the top is a part of it. If they're off then you get nothing at all.

It might be swinging a sledge hammer at a spider, but I use the ADW.Launcher and it allows me to conceal the whole notification area by default and unhide it with a simple swipe on the home screen.
You can download ADW.Launcher and Home Switcher for free in the Market and see if those work for you. It adds a SenseUI feel to the Fascinate which I much prefer over the TouchWiz, anyway.
As a bonus, it allows me to hide all the crapware/bloatware in the App Drawer so I only see what I want, similar to my Blackberry. Win!

I think this is opposite of what he's looking for. He wants a sound and nothing on the bar. This would turn off the sound and keep the bar on, if I'm reading you right. I tried your suggestion on my own phone and it wasn't what the original poster was looking for.

doesn't unchecking the notification box prevent it from showing up on the notification bar at the top of the screen?
I wasn't sure if that would in turn remove the sound as well... some phones will keep the sound without the notification... some won't
