I was wondering if you guys could tell me what somebody means when they are selling a phone and it says "Clean ESN#" or "Bad ESN#" I am looking at purchasing a phone off ebay and I see some that say clean or bad and I just want to find out what I can about them. Also can a Bad ESN# be turned Clean???
Thanks

A 'bad' ESN has been reported as lost or stolen.

Verizon maintains a list of serial numbers (ESNs or MEIDs) that have been reported lost or stolen to Verizon, referred to as the Negative List. Occasionally, an ESN has problems working on the network, but this is extremely rare.
In the case of a phone that had been reported lost or stolen in the past (even if it was found), the phone CAN be removed from the Negative List, but the request has to be done by the owner who reported it lost or stolen. If it's truly stolen, chances are they're not the one with the phone.
ESNs on phones that were reported as lost or stolen to Asurion for an insurance replacement are also put on the Negative List.
If an ESN is just bad and doesn't work with the network, there's little that can be done in...

Why jump through hoops to activate someone else's old phone when you can buy a new one from us Right Now?
...
Because I can't buy a new LG-VX8300 from "us".

You can't buy a new LG-VX8300 from "them," either.

isn't that why they stole it in the first place? 🤨

They need to be on Santa's Negative List, I think.

He asked about buying an old phone. I was merely pointing out that I cannot buy a new phone of the typy I woukd want from Verizon.

Yeah, I know that. My point was that you can't buy a new LG-VX8300 from anyone - us, or them. Tongue in cheek.

I gotcha. I wish that I could by an 8300 Fru Kit from Verizon.

Or two or three, for that matter.

Also, I know in the past that they'd restrict the ESNs of the phones used in past due accounts that had to be closed down.

Yes. I should have mentioned that, thanks. It's still very much policy.
It's a code 35 cancellation for non-payment. If someone doesn't pay their bill, their account is disconnected and the ESNs on their active phones put on the Negative List. The only way those phone ESNs come off the list is when the person pays up (if they DID pay up, they can still call and have the ESNs released).
Thanks mycool.

It's automatically put on the Negative List. Once the account is paid, it stays on the list until a request is made to take it off.
I've even seen people who were on someone else's account and tried to retrieve their number after it's been disconnected, and they're still at the mercy of the account owner paying off the bill.
