If you want to root your phone, go to XDA developers forum. There you will find instructions, tutorials, and reviews. When you root your phone, you are taking a "rom" which is a version of an operating system. In this case, a version of Android similar to what is current. Usually the ROMs can improve performance and add features that people enjoy/would enjoy.

On the downside, rooting your phone can ruin your phone if you do not install ROMs properly. It will void any warranty. Most ROMs overclock the processor to make them faster which in turn can lower the lifespan of the phone.

I rooted my phone and yes it is much faster, smoother, and customizable. BUT I get literally half the battery life.
