Interesting Point of View
Had a conversation with a guy today in regards to the Tuesday press conference/BIG ANNOUNCEMENT. The guy is in wireless, just not the sales aspect of it at all.
He arrived at his conclusion based on ATT arguing with Apple on when their exclusivity agreement actually ends. ATT seems to think due to a metric that they have hit, it gives them until 2012 for exclusivity(again not something we know, but lawyers are involved on each side). If that is true, then perhaps Apple is going to launch a seperate phone on the Verizon network, something just as easy to use, that is running the same OS, but packaged differently. I remember a couple years back there was a rumor going around similar to this.
As far off as it sounds, its plausible. ...

Yeah, makes sense and Samsung is a good example of this. You're right this rumor/point of view has been around for a while. One question would be why do this now when it wasn't done in the past and perhaps with a short wait they could launch the (true) 4G iphone on both networks at the same time? I know there is a ton of money waiting to be made by both Vz and Apple but Apple has enough money they could probably just buy ATT and solve this problem by fiat lol (that was tongue in cheek).

Apple has a good chunk of the market share, but there is always room for more growth. Having two different devices, would help ensure that you actually gain more than just a few percentage points of market share. If they launched a seperate device altogether on Verizon, that was still as easy to use, and had the same OS, I can safely assume they would increase market share by low double digits. Android, and feature phone converts being a vast majority of that, as well as a trickle effect from Sprint, and T-Mobile customers who perhaps did not like the ATT network would probably make a switch as well.

Yes. I suggested that they should do this a year or so ago. Call it the A phone or something.
