I just got back from driving from Philly to Phoenix, going 81S to 40W to 17S, a total of about 2500 + miles. I have a LG VX4500 (Digital Only) and I will say that I only ever experienced loss of signal once or twice and both times were when I was in the middle of the desert such as the El Mapais in New Mexico and in the Sonoran desert in Arizona. I was amazed because I was traveling with friends and the walkies we got died about 2 hours into the trip. But we had fantastic coverage throughout.
Just my 2 cents.

This is good to know inasmuch as I am still struggling with whether to get another trimode phone or whether an all digital phone will now be adequate. In this regard, it appears that substantial areas on the main Verizon coverage map that are shown to have analog coverage only appear as digital coverage areas on the coverage locator maps. Has anyone else noticed this?
...
The one thing to consider with a trimode phone is when you are in sub-prime coverage areas your phone may switch from analog to digital on the fly. That handoff may not be successfull, ie dropped call and the switching from ana to digi will also burn through your battery.

and also, when your phone switches to analog, a lot of times it is in a bad area in the first place, and it dont work very good anyway, usually static is heard more then talk. Verizon has a very good digital network either thru verizon, or thru their roaming agreements. I can only testify to the midwest area, such as Iowa, Nebraska, South dakato, Minnesota, missouri, and Wisconsin. Those states, all digital phone is fine, I was also worried about the all digital phones, but, finally went and got one, have not noticed a difference, if anything, works better, your phone is not searching for analog anymore, sometimes your phone would pick up a analog because it was stronger at that time, but in reality, it did not work very well. well, anyw...

I live in South Dakota...the coverage in the middle of the state leaves much to be desired...80% of the time you can't get signal. The signal is fairly good in larger cities though for example Sioux Falls and the Black Hills.

I'm planning to be in Yellowstone Park next month. The Verizon Wireless maps don't look at all promising.
Anyone here have any experience in that area? I am on the America's Choice plan initiated before 2/21/05 so I can at least roam, while those on post 2/21/2005 America's Choice are probably SOL, with zero signal, according to Verizon's map.

Hmm.. Yellowstone is the first national park. The first time the government ever decided to reserve a chunk of land for conservation purposes. You expect a few towers sticking out of Old Faithfull?
...
If you can find an xternal antenna to plug into your phone I would think it might work otherwise you might be SOL
...
If you're deep in the park you might have problems, but if you're at the outer edges you should be okay. Cody has signal and it's right on the edge of the southern part of the park.

DUDE your in Yellowstone I am assuming on vacation. Turn off your cell phone and enjoy the sights. 😎

For Yellowstone, nobody's coverage is going to be promising. A mate of mine is an outfitter and for big parks like he recommends high end walkie talkies making sure to get the ranger frequency before you head on out. But I can't imagine there is going to be much coverage period once you get away from the highway.

yellowstone would be the same as walking into an all metal/tin building, as soon as you do, watch the signal drop, get a 100 foot whip antenna on your car, and maybe... 😁
...
My former place of employment was actually started in Cody WY...right on the edge of the park, and we always could reach the owner even when he was outside town in Cody. He was a Verizon customer.

Thanks everyone. Well, it looks like I'll need to mount that 100 foot whip antenna on my Audiovox CDM 9900 flip phone when in Yellowstone. Oh well.
