So...my lady just received a Verizon iphone and she is telling me that she has to have an itunes account and provide a credit card before she can activate it. Is this correct?

Shouldn't be. it does have to be activated through itunes, but you should be able to bypass the credid card info for itunes.

She will need an itunes account for any app store transactions even free ones. I'm pretty sure you can bypass the credit card though.
