I've rooted my X a few different times. I don't think you can harm it too bad if you know what you're doing. Do some research and learn how to sbf just in case so you can get back to stock if something goes wrong.

The issue I've had honestly is what to do after I root. I haven't found it real useful. Sure it's nice to install things like the leaked Gingerbread, but the latest one this leak doesn't even require root. I've also used it to freeze my bloatware but honestly didn't notice a bit of a difference with battery life or my phone running better so it's not worth it for me.
