Question about suspension

Ok,the wife and I will travel overseas soon. We have a family plan (700 minutes) with 3 smart phones and one dumb phone; could be gone off and on for up to 6 months and really don't want to pay for what we don't use. My phone is the primary line. Tried to suspend mine but it said 'suspended with billing'. Called and talked to two different people, both very nice and both gave different answers. I'm just looking for the cheapest solution here. Two of the smart phones would be off leaving one smart phone an the dumb phone still working. Appreciate any advice/insight.
Thanks-JT

You can suspend a line without billing tor a maximum of three months. The problem is: If you suspend the Primary line without billing none of the Secondary lines will have minutes to share. So the first thing to be determined is: The two lines you wish to suspend are they Secondary lines? If not then they will need to be. This would entail a simple plan change. Make one of the two lines you are planning to leave active the Primary. Keep in mind that there is a one time $15 charge for a seasonal suspend. Since you plan to keep two lines active, the only thing you are saving with a suspend is the $9.99 share costs and the $29.99 data plan sand any features such as Insurance. I guess it just seems silly to me. Obviously can afford to ...

Azeron-thanks for the quick reply. Since we are going to be gone for an extended period of time I think it's worth it; we're looking at two data plans for at least 3 months, that's about $80/month times 3 or more. While I do have what's generally referred to as a white collar job I'm not a doctor, lawyer or Indian Chief lol.
We work hard for our money and yes, every penny counts sometimes. Just don't see the need to hand Vz appx $240 if it's not necessary. Again, many thanks.

If you don't care to change it, have a cs rep change your primary and suspend the other two online. The $15 suspend fee is waived for processing online no matter the reason. You can even suspend them again in 3 months when it auto falls off. It should tell you that date. Max savings by processing online would be (15 x 4)+[(9.99+29.99)x6] and all it takes is a quick call to have the primary line changed.

It is the same with phone number changes. Catch is that you have to keep your area code.

Thanks you guys; I sent an email to Vz expressing my frustration and 'surprise' a very nice lady called and pretty much explained what both of you just said. I'll probably do just that. Thanks to both of you.

This won't matter much if you bought your primary line's phone after 1/16/11, but if you currently have a NE2 discount coming to you in the next year or so, you WILL lose that discount by making your current primary a secondary line and they will not be able to put it back.

The best solution if you still have NE2 is to change one of your secondary lines to the primary, then make your current primary a single line that qualifies for NE2 down the road. As long as you're over $35, you'll keep something down the road. Once you go $9.99, there's no getting it back now.

Making your current primary a single line won't cost you more unless you leave it that way after your suspensions are said and done.

I've seen this pop up many times ove...

How long do I have to use my NE2 before I lose it?

Six months after it populates, or if your NE2 was before January 16 of this year, until July 16 of this year.

Oh well. I don't think or at least I hope I am not tempted by that $50 discount.
