What will it really cost?

OK, I've got a couple of college degrees and I've researched everything from a new furnace to a digital camera, but I gotta say nothing has made me feel more stupid than trying to figure out what it will cost to use a cell phone. ☹️

After many years of Tracfones, my husband would like to graduate to a real cellphone. We'd like to get a Verizon family plan for two (maybe add the kids later when we figure out how this works...). Based on messages in this forum, I'm looking at the LG 3200 or LG 6100 (we need some analog ability because of where we live near Death Valley). We only have a Radio Shack (remote area) so I can't go to a corporate store to ask this.

When I go to the Verizon site, I see that 500 minutes will cost about $60 per m...

Is there a published schedule? For example does it cost to take a picture? To send or receive one? What if I want to download it to my computer? Is email extra and how does that work?

Taking photos does not cost extra, sending and receiving does though. It is 25c per message sent/received (or you can add a package such as $2.99 for 20 pix/flix). Some people say there is 3rd party software that will let you download the photos from the phone to a computer, but I haven't seen it work, as far as I know you need to send them to an email address for it to get on your pc.

As far as email, well if you are going through Mobile Web it is $4.99/month plus it uses your minutes up. If you are sendin...

You can get insurance, but that doesn't alleviate you of the responsability of calling it in to suspend the service before whoever finds it goes berserker on your minutes. Insurance covers your equipment, not your service.

Verizon does give you up to 48 hours to report your phone as missing. They will credit you for any bill effecting calls made durring that time period. You will however have to wait until your bill comes out for that to happen as until then it's unbilled and illegal to disclose.

Guess I'm not really sure what that means.

For example: Say my bill closes on the 30th of each month. On the 15th my phone is stolen. I figure out it's missing on the 16th and call Verizon. In the meantime, my phone's new owner has racked up several hours in calls to Korea. When do I stop being liable for the charges: when I call it in - or when it was originally stolen?

Then what happens? The bill comes with the Korea charges on it and I file a dispute? Or are they automatically deleted because I reported it?

Sorry to be so slow...

You are basically not responsible for any calls made by that phone for up to 48 hours prior to you reporting it. If it's only been missing for a day or so, you're fine. If you laze around and take a week to call it in, you'll only get credit for the last two days.

Now if the missing phone only makes 3 calls for a total of 45 minutes and you don't end up going over your total allotment of minutes, you are just lucky and get no credit because you're weren't charged anything.

Hope that clears it up.

Normally on a $59.99 plan on a regular month after taxes ur looking at about $66-$67 if u stay in ur minutes and don't use anything else. It does cost more to text message and pix message. If you text/pix other companies yo want to get one that just gives you a number of txt/pix for anybody including emailing it to yourself.

If you're gonna txt/pix other vzw customers then you might want to get the $5 Unl IN Msg/50 additional package. It does not cost to take a pix only to send and as far as I know the only one you can block is the txt messaging. Without a package it's $.25 to send or receive pix. Called ID and voice-mail are included in your plan but when you use voice-mail it uses ur minutes. So if u can use a land-line.

You are ab...

IF I remember, I think verizon raised the price of sending and receiving pics, I am not sure, but, I remember reading $.50 to do that. That could be for sending and receiving pic flix's. Could someone clarify this for me.

thank you

Be careful when you quote taxes, they vary by state and county, where I'm at in Florida they run about 20% so a $60 rate plan is usally about $71-$73 a month, there is no set tax price just like sales tax vary by count so do all the other taxes on cell phones.

The amount of the extra fees will depend on what state you live in. Generally they will match the taxes and surcharges you pay for your lanline. For instance, here in NY, it adds 24% to the price of the plan, plus anyextra packages you add like messaging bundles. We have an old AC family share plan (no longer available) for 54.99 for 2 lines, and after the fees we pay about 72.00. Somes states are quite, in the single digits.

All I can do is share my personal experience... I'm on a $39.99 plan, and usually end up paying about 5 bucks a month over that.

Four bucks is taxes, and the remaining one dollar is from me sending and receiving text msgs. The only x-factor I've really run into is when I've used 411 a lot... that's $1.25 a call, so I try to avoid it.

Oh wait... I've also got the Lockline phone insurance plus extended warranty... that's another $5.99 a month, but I'm going to cancel that as soon as I get my phone upgrade (2nd phone).

Phoebe,
I could type a long winded response. But the easiest thing for you to do is go to your nearest Verizon corporate store (not a dealer) and ask all the same questions. A well trained sales person should be willing to take the time to answer all your questions. You should not feel pressured into buying anything that day if you don't want. I spend most of my day just answering questions. But that's OK, some come back.
