I am in NorthEastern NC and Verizon has coverage up here, but it is an extended digital service. I believe that Verizon used US Cellular towers in my area. My question is...would I be able to use certain data features (internet, mms, etc.) while in the "extended digital" area?

Not usually, but occasionally you will find something that works on another carrier. Generally though you must have be on the Verizon National Enhanced service area, which is usually located around major metropolitain areas.

Some stuff will work and some stuff will not. Unfortunately it is somewhat unpredictable.

The official answer is that even basic digital features such as Caller ID and voice mail alert cannot be guaranteed when you are on another carrier's network.

In reality, most stuff works. If you are on Alltel or US Cellular, you will probably have text messaging, voice mail alerts, and other features like Caller ID and call waiting.

Alltel and US Cellular are genuine CDMA carriers that use technology that very closely mirrors the technology used by VZW.

No guarantees with respect to picture messaging, but US Cellular now has picture messaging compatibility with VZW. So it might just work.

Internet? Hard to say. Last time I was in Kalamaz...

Thanks a lot...I was afraid of that...Verizon has great coverage in my area, but it's "extended" and I need features like mobile web etc. 😕
