A. You must be eligible to upgrade in order to receive discounted pricing.
B. IF eligible to upgrade and IF you take advantage of the discounted pricing, it will require you to renew your contract for 1 or 2 years depending on what you choose as your discount.
C. You can always upgrade your phone at any time without a contract extension by paying full retail price for the phone from the Manufacturer or a Verizon Wireless retail store.

DON'T BUY PHONES ON EBAY!!! just a note from a friendly repair center who sees at least five to ten phones a week purchased off of ebay that are either broken, malfunctioning, for the wron service provider, or 100% inop. Best bet is to bite the bullet, got to a Verixon retail outlet (they're the cheapest), and get a phone with a full manufacturer's warranty.
Ebay phones don't have warranties because they are non-transferrable. If you buy a new phone off of ebay, you'll probably make up the savings with shipping charges. You also can't deal with a human face to face if you have an issue with the device. Getting one at the retail store saves the headache of shipping and re-shipping the phone of there are any real problems.

Georgia1, good advice! I do see a lot of phones come into the store off ebay that dont work, most of them used. Definately try and find an ebay seller which will allow you to return it if somethings wrond with it. We sometimes see used phones that cannot be activated because the ESN was locked due them being reported stolen.
Definately do your homework before you buy. Some stores are soft with replacing phones, but they are not technically required to if they are out of warranty or dont have the extended warranty/insurance Georgia1 mentioned.
