I thought the purpose of preordering a iphone early friday morning 500am) was to be able to get it at release and not wait inline. Why is ship date 10/21 already and no news of it being sold out online?

I don't know how it is with Verizon, but with AT&T we've already run through the initial inventory we had planned for the preorder to ship by October 14. Estimated ship times are 14-21 days, now.
