Dialing an International phone number (long)

I am here in the northeast (usa) and was doing some internet shopping when I came across an item of interest (to purchase).

The company that made this item (non phone related) was located overseas in the UK. After obtaining the companies phone number, I began to dial my very first international phone call.

After dialing the number a few times and getting one of those pre recorded error messages, I placed a call to Verizon customer service. I was told that in order to dial an international phone number, a verizon feature needed to be added called 'IDIAL'. I was told that once this feature was added, it would take 1-4 days to go through the verizon system and I would then be able to place the call. The customer service person then told m...

Just use an International long distance card in conjunction with your cell phone, its cheaper than dialing direct anyway

First, get yourself one of the many phone cards available that will let you call internationally for a very cheap rate, much cheaper than what Verizon will charge you. (You should be able to call the UK for 1.5 cents to 2.5 cents per minute with such a card.) By doing so, you also won't have to go through this Verizon process you described in your post.

Then, dial the phone number for your calling card followed by your pin number for the calling card, then 011, the country code (44 to the UK), the city code and the local phone number. You will have no trouble.
