Ok so here's the scoop, my mom is currently with cingular, and has their GAIT service, which is a specific phone/plan that allows her to use their GSM, TDMA and analog network. That service was only available for a short time, and is no longer offered. While I've not compared that phone to a verizon phone, the coverage on her phone would be very hard to beat. However, the phone itself is getting to be a bit old, and from what she's told me, is getting phone calls at least 2 to 3 times a week from cingular trying to get her to switch to just GSM service, which she's told them plenty of times she doesn't want to do. Well, sadly all things must come to an end at some point, and I'm figuring that they are trying to get as many as they can to con...

From what I know, SingleRate is no longer offerred. However, America's Choice with No Roaming is pretty much all inclusive of the US. It is both Analog and Digital Coverage. I would recommend an America's Choice Plan.
Now, as far as the phone is concerned....(I am going to take some crap for this one) I would advise getting a Motorola V710 for the needs that you spoke of. It is a tri-mode phone, and it holds signal better than any phone I have ever had. And it's features are very good as well. I have had signal on the v710 in places that no other cell phone got a signal.
Hope this helps.

I'm glad to hear your comment because I'm leaning toward the V710 for just the reasons you have stated, but remain a little leery of it because of all the horror stories I've seen concerning this phone.

I am on my 6th one for various reasons. But as far as signal is concerned, nothing is even close to as good as the v710.

I've asked sales reps about this phone at a number of Verizon stores and so far none will admit to any problems with this phone other than that you have to be careful with the charging port. I wonder if those who post the problems with this phone in this forum, such as yourself, are a statistically small percentage of all V710 owners or whether the odds of having problems are pretty high with this phone, even with the newer ones.

Unless you are a power user, you will more than likely not notice the issues. I personally push phones to their limits, so that probably causes some of the problems. If you mainly use it to make and receive calls, it should be perfect for you.

Thanks for the advice about the V710. It's appreciated.

A close friend of mine had chosen to get this phone and went through 3 of them, all with the same problem. The ringer wouldn't stop ringing even after she had answered the call. That made it literally impossible for her to recieve calls on her phone. Needless, to say she gave up on the v710.
From all the stress she was caused over a cell phone I would not reccomend it. Just from what I've experienced second hand.
