Thinkin of switchin To Verizon

I'm currently with CellOne (Western Wireless) and they are getting bought out by Alltel. I now have a "corporate" discount on the cheapest national plan. I've looked at Alltels site and that same national plan will be $15 more and 100 anytime minutes less. Not a good deal even with the discount, if they still will offer the company a deal. My contract is up 08/17.

I have had zero problems with Cell One. Never got a roaming charge. Well the phone suxs but that's my fault. (I'm cheap)

Is Verizon a good choice? That Americas Choice plan says no roaming but when you look at the "agreement of terms" roaming is mentioned, , numerous times. Has a Verizon user got stiffed on roaming? How do you tell when your "really in a roaming situation" wh...

Im going to sound byest (spelling?) but overall Verizon is the best national carrier with the largest calling area of anybody.

On the old Americas Choice plans there were some areas where roaming charges would incur however on the new plans there is absolutly NO roaming anywhere in the 50 states, the only roaming you will receive is if you travel into Mexico or Canada. BUt like I said absolutly, 100% NO roaming anywhere in the 50 states.

Hope this helps

BUT... whereas the legacy America's Choice plans available before February 2005 (AC1) have roaming at $0.69 per minute in some areas, they also allow for reception in many outlying locations, even if its only analog. That's not the case with the new America's Choice (AC2) plans which leave you high and dry, totally without a signal, in many of those same areas. I may be incorrect, but you may not even be able to dial 911 in those areas.

On a recent trip to Yellowstone Park, WY (quite a dead zone), I could get a signal in some areas. A friend with the new plan was SOL.

When I am in Yellowstone I could care less if my phones works. I'm on vacation and don't want to talk on my cell phone.

What's the point of a vacation if you still have to work? That would suck. I understand you gotta do what you gotta, but they need to understand that you need time away from the job to keep your sanity.

I think you can dial 911 even if your phone shows no service.

That sucks, they can make a phone that can call 911 when it has no service but can not call anyone else...The phone companies are screwing us if they can do that.

nwdavis,

You wrote: "When I am in Yellowstone I could care less if my phones works. I'm on vacation and don't want to talk on my cell phone.

That may be fine for YOU when YOU are on vacation. However, my point is that there are now hundreds, if not thousands, of areas in the country where AC2 subscribers can now get absolutely NO SIGNAL.

Just go here, click on Change at the upper left, and check for random ZIP Codes across the country. The light yellow areas are covered by both the AC1 and AC2 plans. But an AC2 subscriber cannot get ANY kind of signal in the white colored areas.

Are the areas where you can get a signal on AC1 but cannot get a signal on AC2 mainly analog? I'm on AC1 and have just purchased the all-digital E815. I'm therefore contemplating whether to switch to AC2 to get the added non-roaming coverage that AC2 provides, but this would only make sense if the areas covered by AC1 where there is no AC2 coverage were mainly analog, since I can no longer get an analog signal anyway.

howardk111,

I can't answer that one authoritatively. Your best bet would be to check the Coverage Locator tool on Verizon's website for the areas in which you anticipate doing most of your travelling.

Sorry, the link didn't work in my last post. Try this one:

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.jsp »

Click on Site Map at the top of the page. Then, in the left column, under Support, click on Coverage Locator to choose a ZIP Code.

If it's national coverage you want, with no roaming charges ever, Verizon's you best option. Maybe I'm BIASED too, but I've all the major carriers, and Verizon is the best for traveling as well as local calling.

No roaming charges ever. Unlimited Nights and Weekends even apply nationwide. You may "roam", using another carrier's service if you're in an area in which Verizon doesn't have it's own towers, but no extra charges. When you roam, you may not necessarily have all the features available you would have on the Verizon network, esp. if you're in analog mode. However, in all the traveling I've done, I've never had any features not work. Features like Vcast or Internet/Data access may not work the same or at all when in certain roam...

what is the plan you currently have with cellone? Like how much are you paying a month and how many minutes do you get?

First we have 3 choices up here in the North. A local Telco, CellularOne and Verizon. So thanks for not getting sidetracked about who's better.

With CellOne I have National35 Plan, 300 anytime, Nts/Wknds unlimited. I have to pay extra for Caller ID.

To get that very same coverage I would have to go with Alltels "Total Freedom" not the National Freedom. For 350 anytime that would be $50. That would be $15 for 50 more minutes?

Verizon 450 anytime for $40.

And yes I do go out into the wilderness of Yellowstone also but I can't ask for the "old plan". I can see not getting a signal, fine. But give me a signal then hit me with roaming and I'll get p*ssed.

lol I understand you about the getting charged for roaming. Just remember Alltel's Total Freedom (no roaming) and Verizon's No roaming are different. With Verizon its you have service or you dont. Alltel's its you have service and if you do not, use any carrier's tower and not haev to pay roaming. If Verizon works out best for you, I say jump on it. Do not make any deals with alltel until you have tried out verizon's service. See if its' for you, Verizon is known as the best but most users do not keep in mind everything that is good is not for everybody. I sell Alltel for a living and Im not here to sell you Alltel but to advice you of your choices. Money wise I say verizon but if you really want to utilize "NO ROAMING" I prefer Alltel. If Ve...
