Verizon Owned the Quarter. Now What?
Seems pretty obvious to even the diehards of other carriers that Verizon did indeed own the quarter.
My question is, where does Verizon go from here? Do they need to step it up a notch and make some changes (for example, some marketable way to deal with overages, a la F&F or Rollover?), or is it really a case of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it?".
The 2Q results really blew me away. Knew they'd do good, didn't think they could do THAT good. 😳

There's not much to say except that Verizon did indeed blow everyone out of the water this quarter in adds. Churn was still low, but didn't it go up from last quarter? I thought it was 1.1% last quarter. Awesome job no matter what the churn was. That many net adds is impressive
Now on Cingular's side of things, they still had a brilliant quarter. Others will say that Cingular is 'headed back to business as usual', but I think that's totally wrong. They had more than a million adds again. Reduced churn again. ARPU was up over last quarter also. The most important thing Cingular managed to do was make a profit. How many years was it supposed to take for that to happen? Net adds was the only metric that wasn't better than last quarter.

Verizon's churn did not go up. Amazingly, in fact, they REDUCED churn further, from 1.3% overall in the 1st quarter to 1.2% overall in the 2nd.
The 1.1% figure you're thinking of from the previous quarter was for postpaid only. Verizon's postpaid-only churn actually dropped further to 1.0% this quarter, which is... well, damn. 😳

Nice command of the stats. Yea lets face it, VZW is doing amazing things in adds and churn, and its going to be very hard for the rest of the industry to catch up, let alone stay in shouting distance.
Theyre on such a roll that I think even the Radio Shack thing isnt going to hurt. The corp stores are stepping it up and were taking share away from Radio Shack (another reason why they left), and with the big electronics stores in the picture too I just dont think RS will be missed. Maybe for the first couple of months, until everyone clues in that you dont go to RS to get Verizon anymore.

When looking at Verizon's quarterly reports keep this in mind...had you invested $10,000 in VZ 5 years ago, your investment would be worth less than $7,000 today. In fact, Verizon's share price has been on a down-hill-slide for the past year. Their phones are ok but their stock is dismal.

Not to burst anyone's bubble, but VZW is not a publicly traded company. The VZ ticker is solely for Verizon Communications (for landline/DSL/Long Distance). I personally decline to comment on the "estimate" of what each share WOULD be, if it were publicly traded, but I will say that my 3 year incentive (based on the company's "value") will cover closing costs of a house, furnish a new living room and bedroom, and new wardrobe. It has steadily been on the uprise at least since 2002.

Just my $.02 worth.. keep in mind that Broadband/EVDO is still in "soft-launch" phase. Mass advertising has not begun for this yet. As Wireless Week put it, it seems that VZW is waiting until the majority of metropolitan areas have deployed EVDO service before the BIG announcement is made.

That's a good point, and an argument for the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" point of view. With VZW being so far ahead in 3G deployment, that's something they can increasingly make hay of in their marketing if they so wish.
Its not necessarily something that'll make the average consumer swoon, but they could snag more and more business users and 'power users'. 🙂
