It was JD Power's 2005 Wireless Call Quality Performance Study, focusing on on static/interference, connecting on the first try, voice distortion/echoes, dropped/disconnected calls, and immediate voicemail and text-message noticification. The USA was divided up into six regions.

Results were:

Verizon-

Mid-Atlantic (1st place)
North Central (1st place)
West (1st place)
Northeast (tied for 1st place)
Southeast (tied for 1st place)
Southwest (last place)

Overall, they beat everyone out, with T-Mobile coming closest and tieing them in two regions.

Sprint had mixed results, being above average in some places, below average in others. Nextel, unfortunately, was rated below average...

'Officially' you do not exist. 'Officially' your service is 'world class' and 'unflawed'. Expect your post to be removed and Verizon's 'men in black' will be visiting you shortly... I've said too much.

😎 Mr Danielson, tell me what you know of the matrix...

I would love to know whether they consider Las Vegas in the West or Southwest. Since we're 250+ miles from the Pacific Ocean but almost 300 miles to Phoenix - I would think (and hope) we're considered in the West.

Um, correct me if I am wrong, but Tmobile uses Cingular's network in the 'west', right? So why would Tmobile's be so good and Cingular's so far behind. That makes absolutely no sense.

Also, Cingular was one point from the top spot in both the Northeast and the Southwest.

Surveys are just silly. 🤣

You asked someone to correct you if you were wrong . . . 😁

T-Mobile doesn't use Cingular's network in the Western region of the United States. It is true that they have roaming agreements with the same regional carriers in some cases, and previously T-Mobile and Cingular had a jointly operated network in CA - but but ATTWS put an end to that.

Then why does my wife's Tmobile phone say 'Cingular' when we go to Vegas?

By the End of the year she be unable to use it. Cingular is going to cease it's roaming agreements with t-mobile eventually everyone else as well.

It's called PrimeCO.

That was their aquisition partner in most of that region. Terrible network to begin with. Verizon has made it better, but didn't have much to start with.

Their former Airtouch regions always do well.

But...

I am repeating myself.

I'm disappointd in you Jake.

It seems to me as though you are mistaken.

Cingular was ranked above average in 1 region, average in 2 regions, and below average in 3. Although still not wonderful, that information would stand different from the information you gave.

What seems funny to me is that Verizon and T-Mobile tied for first in the Northeast, but their website clearly shows Cingular in the running too. J.D. has a clear and undisputed grudge against Cingular, for some reason or another.

Hey, don't blame me. I merely went by the RCRNews article:

Cingular Wireless L.L.C., which acquired rival AT&T Wireless Services Inc. last year and is in the midst of integrating networks, managed only average rankings in the Northeast and Southwest regions, with below-average rankings in the remaining four regions.

Looking at the JD Power site, it does appear that the RCRNews write-up was slightly in error. Instead of Cingy being

Average in 2 regions
Below average in 4 regions

they were actually

Above average in 1 region
Average in 2
Below average in 3

As you said, still not wonderful, but a little better.

I don't know why you'd think that JD Power has a bias against Cingular, though. Their whole business is b...

Do you not see the ratings between Verizon, T-Mobile, and Cingular in the Northeast? You and I can't argue that on their five "dot" scale they all recieved five. If T-Mobile and Verizon tied, then why not Cingular too? If they're going to conduct surveys and rate the companies, why not give a little more detail than a five "dot" rating? Why not give the reason Cingular didn't tie for first in the Northeast? Seems extremely shady to me. 😲

Ruff, you are not alone, brotha.

Me personally, I like how it was addressed that Verizon and Tmob were 'above' average, but that actually only meant by one point. It was done on a point system. 103 pts was the 'average'. Tmob and Veri...

Its not shady. If nothing else, the fact that the survey hammered Verizon in the 'Southwest region' should point that out. That also mirrors the experience of certain folks on this forum, who never tire of telling us that Verizon "isn't good" in ...
