Non-GPS capable phones

Just another fact for discussion...it will be interesting to see how it plays out as far as customer owned equipment goes. With the new FCC requirements that all phones be GPS capable, no phone can be activated on the Verizon network that's not GPS capable. Existing equipment is fine, but there are a few instances where i can see HUGE problems with the customers. If they get suspended for nonpay and their phone is not GPS capable, they CANNOT reconnect with that phone. If they upgrade their equipment and decide to return it and go back to their old non GPS capable equipment...you guessed it. Probably the worst scenario is if their is some sort of error and they get disconnected, then we can't reconnect. That one sucks the most. I think...

That's pretty easy... pass it off on the government. They require it, not Verizon. There is nothing that can be done about it. Done... over.

I've already sold 3 new phones because of this regulation. It's fine with me.

About 1 month ago I purchased an old Audiovox CDM-9000 non-E911 (non-gps) on ebay for 10.00 (to use as a backup phone). I went to verizonwireless.com and went to my account and activated the phone just fine by entering the ESN change and dialing *228 to program. Phone worked perfect. Tried it again about 2 weeks ago and it still worked fine. Went to use it again 3 days ago and it would NOT accept the ESN change. So I called Verizon and they told me about the E911 law.

If you plan on purchasing a phone on ebay make sure you varify that it is E911 ready. I checked mine before I bought it and Verizon was not sure if it would work or not so I chanced it. So my advice is not to buy any non-gps phone.
