They uncrippled the MP3 player on the 8100? And 6256i thoughts...

Interesting... this is probably to counter the expected announcement tomorrow of the iTunes-Motorola phone for Cingular (with others likely to follow later). Another case of competition being a GOOD thing.

Have to wonder if this is part of why the Nokia 6256i was delayed too. The spec sheet for it at Nokia's site says the 6256i has no MP3 player, but the 6255 upon which its closely based does have one.

Perhaps VZW reversed course yet again on MP3 functionality once it saw the iTunes phone was going to happen, and is adding it back in to the 6256i, thus lengthening the delay? As a former QA person, trust me, you do have to re-test all the software when significant functionality is...

I doubt they're feeling that threatened... they spanked Cingy pretty hard last quarter after all.

I think they got religion on MP3 players in phones recently in part because of the iTunes phone, but moreso because they're seeing dollar signs for themselves there. Allegedly VZW is launching some sort of music download service for phones early next year, and that wouldn't work too well if they kept crippling or taking out the MP3 players in their phones. 😕
