I found this while browsing the web. Any Verizon employees here that can tell me if this is legit or not?

All Federal Employees (including retired) are able to get a discount on
their personal cell phones by calling their carrier and mentioning the
"Federal Telecommunications Act 1996 Discount to Federal Employees Past
and Present."

Said something to the effect of being able to get 19-25% off and up to 2 free upgrades per year. Seems to good to be true, but I figure what the heck I may as well ask. 🙄

I recieved an email stating that noone retired may get a discount for working at their previous employer. Even if they"called and mentioned it" they would still need to provide a current paystub, current contact info such as work email/number, id badge, and state id.

I initiated a contract in July but cancelled after a week as we didn't like the phone (or any of the other phones currently being offered) - we were given an 18% disount off of the primary member in the family plan and approximately 60% off on the cost of phones AND I am a retired State Department Foreign Service Employee. I was informed that as a retired Federal Government employee that I qualified for the discount (and was given that discount). Incidentally, Verizon informed me that our account would remain inactive for six months with a notation of the discount - now we are just waiting for some new exciting phones to be released.

Well I will look up the policy tomorrow. The only way that retired fed empl would get a discount is if they negotiated it into the agreement when they worked out a deal. AS it stands now though retirees do not qualify for any corp discounts.

This is a bunch of nonsense. It is an internet myth.

Active federal employees may get a discount. Many federal departments and agencies have negotiated discounts for their employees. In most markets, active duty military service members get a discount. And you probably qualify for some sort of employee discount if you work for the FAA or the IRS.

But these discounts are arranged through contract negotiation between the agency and Verizon. They are not available to retirees.

The retiree stuff is simply an urban legend. Islandman cites an internet item that refers to the "Federal Telecommunications Act 1996 Discount to Federal Employees Past
and Present."

This section of the federal telecommunications act does not ex...

There was some Q&A article in the magazine about discounted cell phone service. The "answer guy" matter-of-factly quoted that 1996 telecom act as saying all current and retired employees are eligible.

the retraction was only mentioned in small print on their website, didn't make the next issue of the mag.

that spawned e-mail threads sent throughout the army and air force saying customers were eligible for up to 30%, two free phones and unlimited text messaging.

that article and those e-mail threads completely changed verizon's policy on employment verification.

I hated adding employee discounts. I think the change is good.
