Almost/About as good as V-Cast...

So I got a Moto e815 back in July, right. I knew that v-cast was just around the corner for Colorado. I got the phone, got the trans-flash card (256mb) and decided to have some fun with it. The phone has a v-cast demo file on it already, plus I took a few junk vids for the sake of having some good samples.

So what the 'ell am I getting at?

MeCast!

I was able to find out the codec-type(s), file format, screen size and GOP size (no clue what that means though) to encode just about anything (AMV's, music videos, TV shows, even MeCast movies to a degree) into an MP4 that'll play back on my phone. Damn I love this thing now.
For anyone who has a v-cast phone, the following bit of info may be useful to get the most out of your phone.

Quick question then......

If the E815 can only do 30 minutes of video, can the 8100 handle more?

Between the two of them, I want to be able to put a movie on the card and watch it on a plane or whatever.....

OK, Buy a PSP. There are tons of movies available for that.

You will not be allowed to watch a movie on your phone while on a plane.

i tried Ninja Scroll as a complete file on both 815 and 8100, neither will play it. methinks the phones lack the memory needed for that.

I have the 8100. You have to use the file type ".3gp" (I use the ImToo converter) I have a 1 gig card. Currently I have:

6-45 min episodes of Third Watch
15-22 min episodes of Chappelle Show
6- 22 min episodes of Family Guy
126-mp3s

And I have 103 MB left on my card.

By converting them to ".3gp" it reduces the size tremendously

Each of the Chappelle and Family Guy episodes are around 8-9 MB but the Third Watch are about 35 MB because I converted them at a higher quality. I haven't tried a whole movie yet...but I know it can be done.

Hope that helps.

You need to use a converter such as ImToo (that is what I use)

the best way i found to encode a movie is to chop it up into 1/2hr bits (as close as you can get merging chapters). program recomondations: ImTOO DVD Ripper (will let you encode several chapters at a time) or MPEG4 Direct Maker. Both are available from c-net. I encoded my copy of GITS like this. took 4 files/ 230mb.

I assumed this has been done since the 710/smart phone days, but I noticed the 710 needed a smaller frame rate (6-😎 to be viable.

yes, I set my frame rate to 15 fps. Also my movies range from 60 mb - 80 mb and the biggest movie I have is like 150 I think. I use 3gp to convert my movies...
