I am planning on switching to Verizon from Cingular b/c i am fed up with the terrible coverage that i have been receiving from Cingular since switching over to GSM. I travel in a lot of rural areas and Verizon's coverage is good in these areas, but a lot of them are only analog so they say i will need a tri-mode phone. Can anyone recommend a phone with the number one concern being good reception, secondly i need a phone that can receive pop3 email, and I also need bluetooth so i can sync to my laptop and use a headset. It seems that the phones with all of the phones with a lot of features dont have analog coverage, any phone suggestions that meet my needs? Are there any third party vendors that may have a better selection of phones that ...

Wow... that's a lot of demands. I don't think you're going to find all those things how you want, it's not possible. First off... the analog coverage is very little. When you're in analog the features you want aren't going to work. Email and those type features won't work unless you are in digital and depending how you use it maybe only on the Verizon network.

Also a note on Bluetooth. You aren't going to be able to sync files using the BT. It's basically only used for headsets. It's not fully operable to do those type things.

Allegedly the Bluetooth on the Nokia 6256i (due out later this month @Best Buy, depending on whom you believe) will not be 'crippled' down to headset-use only, but will be fully functional. Of course we won't know 'till it actually shows up.

I currently have the V710. Have you heard whether a software update will be done to the V710 in order to update its bluetooth if the Nokia 6256i comes out with its bluetooth being fully enabled.

I honestly don't know about that... it would make sense though, wouldn't it? 🙂

I can only suggest checking howardforums or the V710 forum here.

so why doesn't verizon do a firmware up date on the v710 to fix the bluetooth as it was made by moto to start with.

Well *IF* they were going to do it, I'd guess that they wouldn't do it until the 6256i shows up in stores... a 'level playing field' for all their phone makers, as it were.

But this is all so speculative... no one even knows for certain yet that the 6256i is going to show up with uncrippled BT.

If that does happen though, VZW better give their Moto 710 users that uncrippled BT software update, or else there'll be one nasty riot. 😳

I need analog only for the extended coverage area. I dont think that i am asking for a whole lot, if you throw out the analog feature 100% of the high end phones have these features. What is the reason for all the phones not having tri mode capabilities?

Verizon hopes to be at all digital soon. I need tri-mode also and I'm waiting for the Nokia phones to be released. If you can do without camara and want great reception and a really good speaker phone the LG 4650 is excellent. The Motorola 710 is also good but it's hard to find one. It has the camara, bluetooth, speakerphone, etc. Both phones get great reviews from owners.

Yes, all of the high end phones have these features, but they don't have fully enabled bluetooth. You will not be able to sync files via bluetooth with your laptop with any VZW phone unless you hack the phone, or get a PDA phone.

As far as the analog, VZW is hoping to be all-digital soon, as the analog networks must all be shut down by 2008 (or so that is the speculation right now).

In conclusion, if you need full bluetooth (ie sync...

VZW is required to limit their bluetooth capabilities with all phones that have Get it Now on them, due to their contracts with the BREW content suppliers. The only phones they offer currently with full bluetooth are PDA phones. And be careful with those, they do not all have full BT either.

Are you sure your camp is in an analog area, or just an extended network area? I only ask because most of VZW's network is now digital.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is "get it now" and "brew?" I went into the Verizon store the other day planning on opening an account if they met my needs. Fortunatlely, i was helped by an honest and knowledgeable salesman who got on the computer and researched the areas that i plan on using my phone. He informed me of two rural areas that i need coverage would only be "analog" at this time. That being the case he said i would be limited to the "trimode" phones. Unfortunately, the phones that i was interested in were not tri mode. Everyone keeps suggesting the Nokia 6256i, so i may wait until they come out. Any other suggestions?

Analog probably isn't going away 'soon'. The current date is February, 2008, and that even that date may be pushed back if there isn't sufficient digital coverage in rural areas by then (which seems possible).

There's a lot of congressmen and senators from mostly rural states/districts that have a vested interest in their constituents NOT being suddenly cut off from the only thing that's providing them with wireless coverage. Politics, baby.

The v710 is discontinued, but it was a great tri-mode phone. You could try to get that one off of ebay. If not, try the Nokia. It should have fully enabled bluetooth too. But it won't have EVDO.

If you can find the Motorola V710 it has those features including analog but as vzwinagent said the V710 features are limited. The Nokia 6256i will becoming out very shortly. It will also have bluetooth, email support, and analog.

The V710 has real bluetooth, but Verizon has limited the bluetooth only to work with the headsets (you CANNOT transfer files with the bluetooth). It is rumored that the Nokia 6256i will have a fully enabled bluetooth. setup.
