Hurriciane Wilma-Which provider's service works?

I have two relatives in the same apartment in south Florida, in the middle of the aftermath of hurricaine Wilma. They have no power and regular phone service does not work. The relative with the Sprint cellphone still cannot make calls on it (only once or twice did her call go through, and even then what was said by her was so choppy that it was unintelligible). The relative with the Verizon cellphone was able to use the phone with no problems at all until her battery finally died. Now, they have no means of communication, but, hopefully, power will be restored before too long.

more importantly is how is their safety?

well, at least this time sprint's switch didnt get flooded like the previous big hurricane down south so it was better.
(such as katrina, which seemed to affect every carrier out there including sprint, verizon, cingular and others)

when they start to deploy COWS (cell sites on wheels) then there shouldnt be a problem, however, when you have a big disaster area you cant do that and have to wait until you are cleared. i know verizon has generators on their cell sites and others are doing the same. during katrina there were actual damages to switches and to the actual towers, i think this time was actually power loss which is a huge problem becuase only the batteries on the towers and the gener...

They are safe, thank you. I know that from the calls they were able to make until yesterday. I presume that nothing has changed since yesterday. Thanks for inquiring.

no problem.... i just wanted to say whats going on with the situation and how it works... (the backup system etc..)

as soon as they get the power back up then cell sites would be back and running unless there was horrible damage to them. (the cows would help enhance coverage and capacity)

many carriers are having learning experience when these hurricanes come in and destroy property and unfort have people either missing or dead but they are learning so that is a great thing....

if they were able to make calls that mean there were no switches damaged...

next time there is a hurricane down there, perhaps you should tell them to purchase an extra phone battery just in case...

i am glad they are safe!

Well, I am in Central Florida and we got SOAKED, many neighborhoods look like New Orleans, with water to the top of the mail boxes, its terrible.

However my reception on my VZW phone worked fine through the hurricane, even though I had no power for 2 days the phone worked like a champ.

wow.. i hope your alright and same thing with your family.. 🙂

with regards to your reception, that means like i said earlier the switches werent damaged and it seems like the cell sites werent damaged but it had a loss of power. as mentioned they have generators and battery back ups on the towers which expands the life of the tower until they bring in the COWS which they did and that is why it helped you have great service. 🙂 (or perhaps no one was using the phone and you got service that way... lol. jk)

as mentioned many carriers are learning what to do and what not to do in an event of an event like that.

glad to see that you are alright. 🙂

If anybody cares here is the link to ouor local newspaper, keep in mind that where I am at is in Central Florida so we only got 75ish mph winds, so down south was MUCH worse. As bad as it was here we got lucky, the storm strengthened 25 MPH within the last 8 hrs before it hit which took us all by suprise.
