Verizon Wireless adds 1.9 Million customers in 3rd Quarter

SForsyth01

Verizon earnings as follows:

1.9mm Net Ads
41.5% EBITDA
$4.23 Data ARPU
1.29% Churn
$8.4 Billion in Total Revenue
$50.13 ARPU

Looks like another GREAT quarter to me. It won't be long until Verizon is back on top in total subscribers, at this rate. Only 3 million behind now, and looking forward to a record breaking 4th quarter.

Sprint/Nextel reported their 3rd quarter combined results a few days ago. They added 1.3 million net new customers, so now have a total of 45.6 Million customers.

Verizon has a total of 49.3 Million customers, after adding 1.9 million new customers in Q3. In the 3rd quarter, Verizon had an incredibly low churn rate of 1.3%, down from 1.5% last year. Cingular has not reported results yet, but should report them soon. I'm sure they wil retain their no. 1 spot for total no. of customers as of this quarter. But, at the rate Verizon is going, they could be no. 1 as soon as 2006.

Yeah, I guess I can see the marketing thing. I opened up the paper the other day, and they got this ad where the 'Can u hear me now?' nerd guy is standing there kinda smirking, with this army of network techs and equipment standing behind him.

Real simple, and gets the point across. I guess they got a real good ad agency.

The storm o' what? Gettin' beat even worse? 😳

I mean, bro, Christmas is comin', and what izzit they can do to turn it around in the next two months? They got beat by Verizon by over a million subs last quarter. Christmas is allegedly busier, and could be even worse fo' dem.

Only thing I think they can do is triple the number of commercials they're runnin', but even dat can only do so much.

I think they're waitin' around fo' next year, hopin' Radio Sh...

I wouldn't discount Sprint if I were you. Their shareholders just voted to use the "put" option they had with Nextel. That right there is going to put at least 1.9 million customers, never mind the subscriber growth which is bigger than Cingulars. ARPU is a big thing, too. 49.3 million X $50.13 = 2.47 billion in revenue whereas Sprint is 45.6 million X $65 = 2.96 billion in revenue. Technically, Sprint is making more money off wireless than Verizon is.

Competition is always good. 😁

It isn't just about revenue. Look at the operating costs.

If company A had an ARPU of $100 but the operating cost was $90/user then that's only $10/user profit.

If company B had an ARPU of $50 but the operating cost was only $20/user then that's a $30/user profit.

I don't know the operating costs of each company, but clearly the one with a better profit in the end does better.

Actually, your numbers are wrong. Sprint's ARPU is based on only the postpaid subs, not including all the MVNO folks, boost prepaid, and the affiliates. The actual amount is significantly less than what you're posting.

I jus' don' feel it, Camel. Everyone's tellin' me that it takes 3 years after a merger for a company to really get it together.

Sounds like Cingular won't be good 'till 2007. By then, Verizon will have passed 'em. Who knows, maybe Sprint-Nextel will too, if things keep trendin' down for Cingular like they have been.

Just letting you know that if it takes 2-3 years after a merger for a company to get it together (which I belive it does), Sprint-Nextel won't be surpassing Cingular. Now Verizon is another story...

Good point bro. Sprint-Nextel would have ta do a pretty amazin' job of integratin' after their merger, while Cingular would have to do an incredibly terrible job with their merger, fo' Sprint to pass 'em.

It isnt impossible, but it ain't too likelly either. I hear ya.

Do ya think Verizon'll pass 'em, though? From everythin' I'm readin' and hearin', seems like they got about a 2-1 shot on doin' that.

Do I think Verizon will pass them? Definitely. Do I think they'll do it anytime soon/soon enough? Not at all.

I see Verizon surpassing or pulling equal with Cingular by the time Cingular has gotten back on their feet. From their on out it'll be a constant struggle between the two as the top spot is tossed between them and there is no clear cut winner.

But heck, what do I know?

Sprint is in no rush to merge. They'll equip people with dual mode handsets and migrate everyone to CDMA. Also, they'll release QChat over EV-DO to replace iDEN, which will be sold to the DoD. Sprint isn't going to "absorb" Nextel into Sprint PCS like Cingular did with AT&T.

RUFF1415

Oct 29, 2005, 11:38 PM
Exactly.

Keeping the companies seperate won't be attracting any new customers, and attempting to integrate isn't going to keep all of the ones they currently have.

It's basically a lose-lose situation right now for Sprint-Nextel...at least in the hopes of pulling into the number two or number one spot. It just isn't going to happen.

I totally missed Cingular's reporting of Q3!
I looked at the Cingular forum hear, and there didn't seem to be any mention of it. I now understand why. Those figures are nothing to be proud of!
I do understand why Verizon is beating everyone else--there service is simply better and more reliable. It's not the cheapest carrier, but people who are serious about getting their calls and being able to hear the people they are calling will pay extra to get the service they need.
I would suspect that Sprint won't do as well next quarter, as it will be a full quarter with the combined company; and I know so many people, esp. Nextel customers, who are unhappy with the bad service they are getting so far since the merger. This may be a temporary...

Yeah, I don't think too highly of Nextel. I hear their walkie-talkie feature is pimp, but everyone I know who's gone with them for anything 'cept the walkie-talkie hasn't digged them. Just flat ghetto on the coverage.

I guess thats s'posed ta change with them combining with Sprint, but not until they got them hybrid iDEN-CDMA phones out that they're talkin' about, which'll be awhile. And a'course you then gotta cough up for a new phone. Doesn't sound so great.

Yeah verizon's marketing department owns all the other carrier's marketing. That new commerical they have where the guy walks outside and there are thousands of people and trucks outside and he walks back inside and asks the clerk "Who are all those people?" and the lady says "Oh, that's your network." And he walks back outside and starts down the street and everyone follows him.. that was pretty funny
