I had a couple of guys come in yesterday and one bought a LG 9800 outright and sold his v710 to his buddy. I needed to do an ESN change on each line. I got a hold of customer service somewhere on the eastern (I am in Wyoming) side and when we were processing the information he tells me that there is a $20 charge to change the ESN on their accounts. I let him talk to each customer and they agree to the charges and we go ahead. Just as we finish the second one, the cust care rep tells me that the charge is because there are so many people that swap phones that cust care is trying to make up some of the money that each call costs them.

New to this forum, recently joined to research new phones as my NE2 comes up in a few weeks. I would like to know more about this ESN issue however. If Verizon begins charging to do ESN change on-line, I will go to Cingular just to get a SIM card (though I beleive Verizon better network).
Why don't CDMA carriers devise something similar to a SIM?

The ESN change fee only affects, I hope, the customer that purchase phones at full retail, ebay, pawn shop, or something similar. They are the one that aren't happy with their current phone and are not at their upgrade date. It shouldn't affect upgrade customers.
I agree with you on the SIM card thing. Would make things a whole lot easier for people that have a bad phone for whatever reason to transfer their stuff.

I recently bought a "Verizon" phone (Moto E815)on Ebay, I wasn't happy with my current phone. I called Verizon to have it activated, they told me that they would have to charge me $15 for the activation fee or I could on-line to Verizon.com and activate it myself for no charge. So I did, it was simple and only took a few minutes.

Here's the scoop on the processing fees, which are now $20. If you are changing esn's, getting an early upgrade, or changing your number you will be charged the fee (unless you process your esn switch on line, then its free). The fee does not apply if you are eligible for an upgrade or warranty swaps.

Not all ESN changes can be done online. That is why I had to call in. If you are switching from a phone that has EVDO to one that doesn't, or vice versa, you have to call in as the website will not let it go through.
Also, if you are switching from a phone that has Mobile Web 1.0 to one that has 2.0, you have to call in as the website doesn't allow that to happen because they need to make changes to the account features.

I'm sure if you said that you tried it online but because of this reason you couldn't do it then they would probably wave that fee...I'm not sure because i don't work for verizon but the company i work for has a simular fee but if you say you tried it online and for some reason wouldn't let you then we will wave it.

We call only one number for any customer service options. I got transferred to this guy and that is what the process was.

We call credit and activations for everything. They are there for us. No need to wait for customer service. Option 3 will usually handle just about anything. Option 4 is for billing and that type of thing. If we do ESN changes or anything we always call credit and act.

I obviously do it through EROES first if possible. If it fails to go through or whatever then I call credit & act. They have access to EROES and can either fix it or do it for me. I've never been told we should call customer service. Credit & Activations also doesn't charge. That's because they are for indirect and are doing it for us as if we had done it.

That policy seems reasonable as long as they keep on-line activations free. My kids are rough on phones. In the last six months I've had to buy three off Ebay which I activated for free on-line.
Also, when I get a new phone soon, I'd like to keep my old phone and reactivate it certain times such as when going to the beach (I'd be heartbroken if I get sand in my new VX9800). I would probably switch to a GSM provider if VZW started charging for on-line activations.

Well Here is one more reason to go to an indirect agent like me. We do not charge the processing fee under any circumstance here. Well phone number changes get the fee because verizon has to do that on thier end but anything else I do not charge the fee. It is my sole discretion however, if I wanted to charge the fee I could

In the northeast, full retail is not charged the processing fee. Check your M&P. Maybe your area is different, but this is the exception. Also, ONEBILL customer's aren't responsible for the fee bcz they can't log in @ my account.

I am as well in the Northeast area. You need to read "MDN and ESN change request proccessing fee" M&P. Under exceptions, no place does it say a full retail price is an exception.

If you read the Processing Fee M&P, you'll see that phones purchased at retail price are not charged the $20 fee. Short of posting the M&P on this forum, I have no idea how to prove it to you. Try emailing the Methods and Procedures mailbox and they'll point it out.
I thought phones purchased at retail would be charged the fee too until we were told no in an M&P Sessions meeting and I looked at the M&P after the meeting to confirm. It's there.

Like I said...I called our customer care line, which cannot handle the eastern area codes (NY and OH). They patched me to the eastern area customer care call center (where is beyone me). The customers had Canadian Addresses, couldn't access My Account because of their address, and they were driving a truck (no internet service obviously). Its really not that big of a deal to me. I was just curious as to why the eastern area was charging this fee. Western area call centers do not charge this fee. Like the rep told me, they get calls from the same customer 3 or 4 times a week doing ESN changes and it gets old. I can understand they are trying to limit those kind of calls which may be why in the first place. Heck..I don't live there and I don't...

I guess I was ahead of myself. I got an email today from our knowledgable and all wise Verizon Rep stating that we in the west are going to charge $20 for ESN changes. It's only on outright phone sales and customers reverting back to an older phone. That's only if we call customer service and have them do it.
We here in the Western half of the US are a little slow anyway.
