do you think them changing their name again will discourage new customers, or encourage them?

Any other opinions about this?

Discourage in my opinion. I think as when they changed from ameritech to cingluar the name was not known. Plus changing the name in the public eye who is AT&T????

AT&T is a solid name people know and trust, I'm not sure why you think AT&T doesn't have public recognition... it certainly does.

AT&T stands for American Telephone and Telegraph (tells you how old that name is). AT&T is a world-wide known name. GTE on the other hand...

Should help. Cingular's rep is pretty much crap right now (an' even their CEO admits this), any change should be a help to them.

yep, toilet bug and cingular go hand in hand right now, a name change could help as long as a new strategy is implemented as well.

This is news to me. What name are they planning on using? I would have to say Cingular is the biggest threat to Verizon, and its most serious competitor. I have met Stan Sigman personally. He is at least as good of a CEO as Mr. Strigl, very determined and resolved. I expect to see big things from Cingular in the coming years, a name change is the last thing I would expect.

A rose by any other name will stink as badly.

I would agree that the "at&t" nameplate may carry more clout than "Cingular" does (which used to be known as "Cellular One" in my part of the US), but the public is not stupid, either. There aren't that many people left out there who don't know something about cellular communication. The newly-named network is going to have to do some pretty heady things, most of all BUILD OUT THEIR NETWORK SO IT WORKS EVERYWHERE THAT VERIZON DOES before Verizon should worry much. What Verizon needs to do is keep up with the demands of their constituency, including getting some handsets that have some personality, and offering some things other folks do now, like off-peak time beginning at 7, even for a nom...

i think it will help verizon becuase everyone knows verizon is better in every way then cingular... even when they change it to ATT it doesnt mean their brand image will increase... time will tell, but i think verizon will bennefit.. as long as they have the best network in the industry and the best brand image they will be fine.
