Buying Phones On Ebay

So, if you buy a phone on ebay, how do you know the phone is legit? I mean, it's one thing to see that the phone is in perfect condition, but how do you know that it hasn't been stolen?

You can always message the user with any questions you might have. Perhaps get the ESN if its CDMA or EMEI if its GSM and see if there is a block on it for theft or whatever...

I have bought and sold a total of about 7 phones off of ebay and I have never had a problem...but dca is right, ask for the esn, usage numbers, basically get as much info as you can. Also check the sellers feedback ratings.

P.S. if you want an LG 8000 I was about to list one on ebay...let me know if you might be interested!

Not interested in the 8000, but thanks for the offer.

I thought about the ESN, but a lot of these guys say they will give out the ESN once you win, (because I guess ESN's can be stolen? I am not really that knowledgable abou that kind of stuff) I've also don't ebay that much... If they won't give you the ESN until after purchase, is that pretty much just the name of the game? What are the steps to take if you do purchase a phone with a bad ESN?

put it back on ebay and don't give the esn number until there is a winning bidder.. 🙄 🤣

but seriously after a phone is deactivated for a little while it's ok to be reactivated. if it's stolen you won't get caught unless it's seriously recent or maybe untill you file an insurance claim on the phone that someone has already done. with cdma (vzw,) it's ruff to activate a stolen phone. but with gsm (t-mobile, cingular) it can be done easier.

hope this helps. 🙂

well, I don't think they would give me insurance on a phone I bought on ebay, anyway, i think you have to buy the phones at the store to get insurance on them? So I wouldn't file an insurnace claim on it.

So, what you are saying is if I buy a phone on ebay, I should wait a month or so just to make sure there are no glitches. I would be seriously pissed if I bought a phone and then Verizon wouldn't let me use it.

First of all, no-you cannot get insurance on a phone you bought on ebay. You can only put insurance on a phone you buy from Verizon and it has to be done in the first 15 days of purchase.

As far as asking for the ESN #, I sell all of my old phones on ebay and will NOT give this info out to anyone, because like someone else posted on this thread, the ESN can be stolen. So you never know if someone is asking for it for legit reasons or not. I can tell you, though, I've done a lot of dealings with phones on ebay and have never had a problem. Best advice is to check the seller's feedback and return policy.

if you already have insurance on you account your new phone is covered automatically. unless to clearly tell the person HEY I PURCHASED MY PHONE ON EBAY AM I STILL ABLE TO STILL GET INSURANCE?

if the phone is NOT discontinued and is VERIZON WIRELESS branded you are able to have it covered. AS LONG AS IT CAN MAKE AND RECEIVE CALLS you will be cool.

i even know of disco'd phone that have been attatched on an insurance plan.

Be careful of the information you are giving. As soon as someone calls to report a phone lost OR stolen, that ESN is immediately placed into a negative database and if someone else tries to activate it, it will show up as lost/stolen. These phones are not removed from this list unless it can be verified that the person calling to activate the phone was the person who initially reported it lost/stolen. It doesn't just "drop off" after a few months. It's permanent. I've even seen issues where Asurion have sent people phones that show up on the lost/stolen list, and guess what? You still can't activate it. Asurion has to send out another. Now you see how hard it is to activate one of these phones. So, contrary to what has been stated p...

I've bought about a half dozen phones on Ebay over the last few years and have never had a problem activating any of them. I have been disappointed with the condition of a couple of them however.

Like anything you buy on Ebay, make sure the seller has a good feedback record.

The only issues I have ever seen with my customers bringing in Ebay phones, is when shortly after purchase, they find out the phone was water damaged. It is not as if you would know that without pulling the phone apart in most cases.
I suggest before leaving seller feedback, get the phone checked out- Also, do your serial number change through MyAccount on verizonwireless.com as it is free.
If you have an LG, you will need the serial number converted from Hex to Decimal format.

Also, when buying off of ebay, make sure it is not a older phone that does not support E911, as verizon will not activate it.
