Dial Up Netweorking & Bluetooth

LGquester

Does Verizon offer any phone that offers Bluetooth and also still supports Dial Up Networking? I don't care at all about MP3 players, spiffy cameras, etc. But when I'm in an airport or a hotel, it is very important to me that I be able to use my cell phone as a modem for basic dial up networking like I can with my old LG6000. I'd like to upgrade the phone to one that also allows a Bluetooth headset. Anyone know of such a phone? The LG8100 sounded good until they killed of the DUN feature.
Thanks.

actually, the 8100 and the 9800, both bluetooth, are going to be able to be teathered to a laptop for dial up speeds. won't be able to get the broadband but will be able to use as a modem for dial up. now before you all tell me i'm wrong, this is directly from our data team leader. and trust me he doesn't get misinformed. if its told to him its real

I disagree. Both phones are V Cast and the last thing Verizon want is you to surf on their EVDO network that so far can not be distinguished from 1x in terms of billing. All VCAST phone have Dial-up disabled and if you do manage to enable it don't let us catch you since it violates the terms of service. I suggest you get an E-815 which I read can be forced into 1x even on EVDO network.

cant you hack the 815 to work in dialup (quick to net, right)

would it work if you just called your local bbs/dial up service (3035551111 or whatever) to use it as a modem. never had the need to play with my cell phone that way.

Actually it works fine with the E815 and at EVDO speeds. I have had an E815 since July and have connected my Dell Axim X30 (Pocket PC) via wireless bluetooth to it in order to browse the internet. I have run speed tests from http://dslreports.com/mspeed (speed test site for mobile devices) and have had results ranging from 200 to 400 kbps. (the E815 can have wireless Bluetooth DUN if you quickly type: ##ENABLE on the E815). I also have achieved similar speed results from bluetoothing it to my Laptop as well. Works like a champ for the past 6 months and never received any warning from Verizon.

The truth is, that Verizon has no way of enforcing anything from preventing you to access the EVDO network for as a modem. They DO NOT have the tech...

Oh one more thing...

the reason I only get 200 to 400 kbps speed is because of the Bluetooth link from my phone to PPC or laptop. The bluetooth radio being so close to the CDMA radio causes some interference. This is a common issue and no way around it. I get higher speeds using my EVDO PCMCIA card in my laptop and ran the tests simultaneously to see the difference.

Well, that's the problem I'm having. Everyone seems to have a different answer and Verizon says you can't hook a LG8100 up to a computer at all, even to load your address book. DataPlot sells their software and cable for it to do that, but says that it will not function as a modem with their product. I don't even want to call into Verizon's network for dial up. I have other ISP's I can dial into if the phone will allow itself to be used as a modem phone. I'm wondering if the new RAZR from Motorola will be allowed to be used this way on the Verizon network. Otherwise, I can either stay with my very old LG6000 or I might just change phone companies if Verizon won't allow such a basic service to work. Thanks for any help.

Just went onto VZW.com and looked up accessories for that phone and there is not a mobile office kit listed...

Don't think there is one.

Well, to add to this discussion, a friend of mine has been able to get his 8100 to dial into the internet using the 1X network and a data cable. I don't think he has been able to do it over bluetooth, though.

I just called him. He did it over bluetooth using the Verizon Connection software on his computer. It would not let him connect EVDO, just 1X, but he said that sometimes he did get EVDO speeds.

does it cost extra or anytime minutes to use my cell phone to get into the internet for my pc?

It will cost minutes unless you subscribe to the V-Cast service for $15/month. And also realize that if Verizon feels that your data usage is too high, thus being used for something other than what they authorize (Dial Up Networking is not authorized), they can terminate your service and charge you an ETF due to breach of contract.

Well, I am not disbelieving you. However, you said that this is something that "Verizon is going to do on the LG8100." You didn't say that it is something that they are doing now. Any idea of when the "feature" will be available from them or even what I should be asking them for? When I ask about using any of their current phones that offer Bluetooth, also for basic Dial up Connection, they say they don't offer that with any of their phones now. That's what I am still confused about.
