This is absolutely outrageous!

Good morning.

I hope a good number of you read the stories on the front page of phonescoop.com like I do. The one at the top of the pile this morning completely pushed my buttons!

Magistrate Judge Gorenstein of the Southern District of New York issued an opinion this week permitting the United States government to use cell site data to track a cell phone's physical location WITHOUT the government having to obtain a search warrant based on probable cause.

Knowing full well that technology has had this capability for a while, and it can certainly be assumed that in some cases this has been going on for a while anyway, every single one of us who lives within the letter of the law should be absolutely outraged at this breach of civil...

1. there is a section under that article to discuss this, why didn't you post this there.
2. read your quote above, if you don't do anything wrong what do you have to worry about. Your not going to be tracked down unless you break the law. They aren't tapping into your conversation nor can they even pinpoint your exact location (with what they are allowed to do here)

I agree with your first point, not so much the second, but that's your opinion. This thread should be posted elsewhere since it's off topic.

And how do you know the people who never crossed the line don't get tapped?

There is a wonderful illustration about the authorities coming after all of one's friends, and he kept quiet through each visit. Finally, they came for him, and there was no one left to speak for him.

We're in this thing together. Remember that!

who cares if this is in the wrong forum, point is, people better start paying attention, or the freedoms you enjoy will be gone. You lose one little freedom here and there, and all of a sudden, the freedoms our founding fathers fought for are lost. I know a lot of you on this forum are kids, teenagers, our young, and this stuff does not matter to you at the point, but, it will.

Here is something that should matter to the young, unless mommy and daddy pay for everything. Look at how things are done now in government. The senior citizens get a lot attention from law makers. You do not see social security getting hacked on so it wont go bankrupt, no, you see them making retirement age at 70 and reduced benefits, and maybe even higher de...

The turnaround time from requesting a court warrant to getting the permission to actually doing the tap is long enough to "lose" a person with anti-American criminal intent.

In the past, America's foes were Russia in a slow-moving Cold War. Now, after 9-11 we know that we are fighting an enemy with very different tactics -- more difficult to find and much faster moving than Russian submarines chuffling their way towards the West. More difficult because we fight not a nation, but anonymous individuals who hide amongst us and whose only goal is our destruction.

The other profound difference is that although the Russians looking to defeat us, they were not crazy. The terrorists these days are quite crazy in that they are willing to kill...

how insane people can get. The only one who would have to worry about being traced are those who are doing anything. Hell, if being on a gps locator is the diferance between me living to see the next full moon than hey, go for it. If the govt really needs to know that i'm doing on a consistant basis fine: Poking smot, masterbating, watching anime (sometimes all at once) and posting on this board. I'm pretty sure most of us out there have just as exciting of an existance. In england, noone seems to have a problem with all public streets being monitored. Noone cares about the average joe's 24-7, abdulla bin-blowing-something-up, or Naij Tamil (cant think of anything good) who both have ties to alquida, or Peter Falk, who has close ties to the ...

That ain't exactly true. People thought that kind o' thing during the Nixon days, an' apparently Tricky Dick used the IRS to get 'payback' on people on his 'enemies list', an' used some of the intelligence services to illegally spy on those people too. He abused his power, and he was President.. food for thought.

The reason you don' leave all the power in the hands of just one branch of government (in this case, the executive) is 'cus it can always be abused.. if not now, later. Thats why America has 3 branches of govt, who check an' balance each other.

Like it or not, th...

Totally agree, sngwrtr. An' here's a quote that sums it up for me:

"Those who would give up liberty for security deserve neither liberty or security."

-Benjamin Franklin

You even had a Republican senator from New Hampshire (Sununu) quotin' the above on the Senate floor (an' rightly so) as he opposed renewing the Patriot Act without major changes to it, to preserve individual freedoms.

Its not just a liberal-conservative, Democrat-Republican issue.. there's conservatives too who believe that you don't destroy what America is all about in the name of fear. If you do, then the terrorists have already won.

But this is the wrong forum for this..
