it updates your roaming list in your phone to take advantage of any network enhancements. you want to do option 2 to update your phone. option 1 is what you do to program your phone initially. you dont really need to do it every month, its recommended every 90 days.

it used to be recommended every 90 days, it's now recommended every 30 days. although, I'm sure every 90 days wouldn't hurt.

Besides any enahancement services on existing towers, it updates roaming areas that have new agreements with other CDMA carriers, and for areas that may have once been a roaming area, but now a VZW service area, and new VZW towers are up. That way, the phone will detect new VZW towers and not falsely pick it up as a roaming tower. Too bad CDMA phones weren't made to automatically pickup the carriers' towers like GSM phones do.

*228 option 2 will download provisioning roaming codes and prefixes, roaming preferences, and ids.
