Tri Band Phones...

EtherBoo

I currently have the v710, which from what I was told last night, was the one of the last tri-band phones. I've been wanting to upgrade to a new phone, but my house is a cell phone nightmare. In fact, the only service thats ever worked inside my house, is VZW.

Now, I have 2 Verizon phones, the other which is an LG that doesn't work at my desk. When I asked a tech at the store, I was told that my v710 has better signal because its a tri-band phone, but Verizon is trying to phase tri-band out and go all digital.

I would really like to upgrade my phone (the v710). There is nothing wrong with it, it works perfectly after taking much more abuse then any phone should, I would just like to upgrade to something more recent.

What s...

First off, it ain't always true that a tri-mode phone gets better reception. All 'tri-mode/band' means is that the phone works with analog towers as well as with digital ones. But that don't mean that the phone automatically has great reception.

Its very possible for a phone to be trimode and have poor digital reception, poor analog reception, or both. Trimode is a FEATURE, it don't have anything to do with QUALITY.

Should also be pointed out that most o' the time the only areas served by analog are way out it the boondocks/rural areas. If thats ain't where you live/work, it may be that you're groovin' on the V710's good DIGITAL reception, not its ability to do analog.

If you still feel like you need the analog, there ARE more r...

SystemShock is right you're not getting better reception b/c the phone is tri-mode.

in my experiences tri-modes are better and i would sitch with one. but a factor that is probably giving your v710 better signal is b/c it has a pull up antenna, more times than none they will get a better signal tan a stub antenna phone. i would wait till the new motorola is re-released, since it seems that you've had such good luck with moto's 🙂 but i've heard awesome things about the nokia, and they botha have pull up antennas so i think its a win-win situation!

hope i helped a littlebit!

ps. what model LG do you have?

Thanks for that, I'm really a bit of a n00b when it comes to phones, and I have to rely on what I hear from tech's at the stores. I really like that Nokia, a friend of mine has it for MetroPCS, and he actually has decent reception with them (they're called MetroPOS and GhettoPCS down here in Miami, because they're known for having the worst service, just the best plans), which makes me thing the phone is probably somewhat decent. I also know the camera rocks on it compared to my Moto.

Since its available for VZW, I'm actually going to look into it. I am a huge fan of Moto's, but since the RAZR doesn't have any PC Connectivity at the moment, and the E815 is beginning to show a little age, it s...

I was also concerned about going to an all-digital phone since I live in a fringe area. I did get an all-digital phone when I upgraded on the understanding that I had 15 days to return it and it didn't count as my "one exchange" because of where I live.

I was surprised that I get better reception and don't have near the dropped calls that I used to. There are two known dead spots where I was guaranteed to lose service with my trimode. I drove through them while talking on my all-digital phone to see if I would drop and I didn't. I can also get a signal inside stores such as Walmart/Target where I couldn't before. If we needed to make a call, we had to go to the parking lot. Now, people just borrow my phone.

what kind of tri-mode phone did you have? If it was an LG that's probably why you would go out of service. in major areas theyre great! but when you get into an "IFFY" coverage area they dont work all that well compared to a handset with an extendable antenna, atleat in my experiences

Hmmm, a friend of mine actually resparked my interest in the RAZR last night by showing my about motomodders and howardforums. There is a way to xfer ring tones to it, and its a standard miniUSB which is awesome. Additionally, the fact that it charges from my USB port if I connect it to my PC that way, is VERY nice.

I'll look around howardforums and see if there is a hack for it. I know the camera on it is awesome, and blows the Moto camera away. Night mode is awesome, and while a camera isn't essential, it definitely is a bonus.

Voice serivce is rated on 3 scales.

1) Voice Quality (Precieved Lack of Noise, Clear Conversation on both ends)

2) Availablility (can you complete,Recieve Phonecalls. - This has alot to do with traffic out-side of your voice registrations,de-registrations etc..)

3) Survivability (In the event of any disturbance or interruption (e.g. walking into an elevator, running on 1/2 charged battery, moving between towers) how much and how quickly will the call quality degrades to an extent where a conversation cannot occur.

Each Digital Phone has a Licensed CODEC CHIP that Encodes your Voice, depending on the maker, they put all sorts of "features" you may not know about.

Ummmmm... Circuit City is a direct Verizon Wireless outlet. It's a VZW kiosk that happens to be in CC with reall VZW employees.

Triband Phones are something Verizon is looking to do away with.

Since they are now "100% digital" truth is, Digital signal degrades faster during signal loss then analog signal since you'll hear noise but it will still work.

But digital signal is much cheaper to deliver since you only need so much radio frequency space to send ones and zeros at 6/10th's Analog signaling used to work at almost full 3, then was moved to 6/10ths as well due to the
"Brain Cancer Scare"

Per tower (cell) (SystemB) 800 analog channels exist, that could be subdivided (multiplexed) into about 12,800 digital channels. You have approximately 3 towers around you, at different distances. You send your registration to the tower your phone thinks you have th...
