Just upgraded...signal is worse? Ideas?

Hi all,
My wife and I just upgraded our phones. She got a LG VX6000 and I got a VX4500. I've noticed the the sound gets choppy quite often, I even lost my connection one night. I returned the 4500 and got a VX4600. It still seems a little choppy. My old phone (LG TM510) never gave me a problem. In fact, I went back to the TM510 after returning the 4500 and the sound was fine. These observations are from my home. My wife doesn't use her phone as much at home but it is choppy too.

The "D" (digital signal indicator) never lights up on either of our phones. The tech support individual that helped me activate my 4600 said I should probably take my phone to the local verizon store to have it checked. The "D" was present on my old phone.

Any...

If this is a Tri-mode phone, could it be in some sort of "Forced Analog mode". 😲

Nada, VX4500 is only a duel band phone so it oculd not force an analog mode.

Thanks for the responses.

My old TM510 is tri-mode (I think) but all three LG's (4500,4600,6000) are digital only. This is what has me concerned. Our phones show good signal strength (2-4 out of 5 bars) but maybe the digital signal is crap at our house? I know nothing about signal tech.

Your TM510 is trimode. Look at your phone when you're at home. If the "A" pops up instead of the "D", then you're on an analog tower. If you're not, then a digital-only phone will probably work pretty well for you. Most people never have use for the analog side of their phone, but some do. The LG 6000 tends to be a bulldog with signal, too. I'm not so sure about the 45/4600, though. I haven't had much ex...

If you like the new models and want something similar to the 510. Go with either the samsung 650, or the 3200. These are 2 very new phones with the latest features like the ones you've tried already. Just remember, you can't try out too many phones or VZW won't let you change again...

Sir ,
I work with Tech Support and customer service with VZW. Both the lgvx4500 and the lgvx6000 are doth 1x/Digital signal only where the phone will give problems if getting near or entering an Analog area. You Samsung A510 is a quality phone with trimode service. If you want a great phone go with the new LGVX3200. This Phone is 1x/Tri-Mode capabilities. Also .... at least once a month you are going to want to press *228,SEND, and then choose Opt. 2. This will giver your phone a software upgrade, and update your SID ID with any new or updated towers. This can only be done if you are receiving a Digital Signal

It seems to me that somebody who works for Verizon tech support should know that the phone in question is an LG TM510, and not a Samsung A510, which I don't think even exists. Not to mention that the complaint he mentioned doesn't sound like a problem with a digital signal, since the signal itself is looking good, the sound quality just sucks. And while we are on it, a PRL update only helps the phone know where it is roaming and where it isn't. It won't actually give him a clearer signal. That looks like three strikes for you my friend. If you really are with Verizon tech support then God help them.

Ok, went to the local verizon store today and talked to the tech folks about my problem. She said I may need to go back to a tri-mode phone. This is very frustrating. I really like the 4600, when it works. The 4600 is a digital only phone.

Is it worth the trouble to go to a tri-mode phone? Does it sound like it will solve my problem?

The Samsung SCH-650a is a tri-mode phone. Any opinions?

Thanks,
DM

It sounds like you got a canned answer because she didn't know what else to tell you. They've been saying "you need a tri-mode phone" for so long that they don't know what else to tell you. You said you are showing a good signal at your house with your digital only phone, so that doesn't really explain the problem. In fact, I was just at my grandparents house, and they live in kind of a rural area. They have a tri-mode Motorola V120e, and they have a hard time holding any signal in the house, digital or analog doesn't matter. I happen to be using an LG VX4600 at the moment, and I had a perfectly clear signal with 2 bars. I don't have any other good answer for you, but I don't know if tri-mode is your solution either.

Sorry you and your wife are having issues with your phones, especially the 4500! ☹️ I have a LG-4500, and it's been a great phone...even over my previous phones which were a Samsung A310 and a LG-510. Possibly it was the handset? You can try going to a tri-mode phone, but riding in analog all the time is not good either...it really drains on the battery and can sound terrible too. I hated it when my Samsung A310 went analog!! But some phones seem to perform better than others...for whatever reason. Try a Nokia-3589i (tri-mode), I have heard good things in regards to signal-strength on this one. Also, the Samsung A530 has receive good reviews...and this is all digital! I don't think adding analog to your phone is the answer...if ...

Thanks for all the responses!

I've noticed that my signal occasionally drops to one bar with the 4600. I used the phone today for about 35 mins and the sound was great with only an occasional 'skip'. I was in my house too.

It's weird that my old 510 worked great. I am not in a rural area either, I live between Baltimore and Wash. DC. This is why I'm suprised that I'm having trouble at all. Could it be a tower problem? Is there any way I can find out if it is a tower issue? Is it safe to say that digital reception will get better in time (I assume that all the carriers are shifting to digital)

I'm not sure that a tri-mode phone will help me either. Besides, I haven't found one that I really like that Verizon offers. My old 510 shows...

Thanks for your reply and comments, DM. Yes, the voice command is not one of my favorite things because unlike the 510 where you could just press "clear" and speak a name, the 4500 makes you go through an extra step or two. I frankly don't use the voice command that much, I got the phone more for the speaker-phone. I do like the looks of the 4600 your using better, but I would seriously look into the Nokia 3589i...on 3 different forums I see mostly positive comments about the RF performance. I have personally never owned one, but I've heard they work well. Also, have you asked around what friends/family use in your area for a carrier and what success they have had with that carrier? I'm not trying to steer you away from Verizon, but not...

Funny, the speakerphone was one of the things I didn't like about the 4500. Actually, it was the fact that the voice command 'talked' to me via the speakerphone. You can turn it off, but you have to be in manner mode, which turns off the ringer.

I used the phone several times today from home. It worked without issue. I'm worried that it is very sensitive to weather conditions. I have another 1.5 weeks to evaluate it.

I've also heard good things about the nokia, but I want a flip phone. I'm looking at the Samsung a650 as a possible alternative.

The speakerphone for me comes in handy if I call the bank, etc...so I don't have to "purch" the phone on my shoulder while trying to write something down.
The Samsung A530...while totally digital, has had excellent reviews as well.

Chris,

The speakerphone actually worked very well, but I didn't need it. I don't use my phone in my car much either, and when I do, I use a mic. I did like the 4500 better than the 6000 because of it's size.

Well, I've used my 4600 over the past few days at home and it has worked fine. I even used it from my basement yesterday. The weather has been very nice here lately. I think I that it was very humid when I was having my initial issues. Hopefully the phone isn't too sensitive to weather.

Thanks for the input,
DM
