I have heard the rumor that sometime in the near future (before 07) That due to the insecurity of analog signals, that the government will be "kicking" all carriers off of analog signal.

Has anyone heard this also and is their any validiy to it?

If so what is Verizons plan to combat this?

well vzw is pretty much all digital know. some of the carriers they roam to still have some analog. but in about 1 1/2 years they will be able to drop analog and go to just digital. that is why most carriers have almost all digital phones know.

Haven't heard anything at all like dat.

Last I heard, carriers were still required to support analog 'till early 2008.

A big recent story tho' was about analog TV goin' bye-bye mandatorily, but that isn't 'til early 2009, according to the latest bill from Congress.

Analog seems to keep findin' ways to hang around.

it's not that analog/(NTSC/PAL) televison going away, but all local (DMA) providers are going to be required to offer an HD/EDTV retransmit. there is way too much market saturation of SDTV tuners, as well as the fact the HD/EDTV signals wont work that well in rual america. Ma and Pa in Stumpwater, NE still need to get their tornado warnings.

Cingular plans to eliminate analog from their towers at the end of this year since they don't sell any handsets with analog. At least that's what I read somewhere on the internet. Only CDMA carriers have continued to support analog on thier phones, with the exception of Verizon Wireless, where they're offering fewer handsets with analog for backup. If I get the Nokia 6256i, that will definitely be the last tri-mode phone. I'm not worried about Verizon's network since I almost never make analog calls. I'm more likely to be making an analog call in SW Michigan on Alltel, though it depends on where I travel as Verizon expanded their coverage in SW Michigan, especially along the I-94 corridor.

To be fair, Verizon's gotten three new tri-mode phones in just the last three months, wit' the Nokia 6256, Moto v325, an' the Audiovox 9200.

Trimodes are still comin' out, but the pace will be slowin' if it ain't already.

Reason for that I think has more to do with the increase in EVDO phones than with analog potentially goin' away in early '08 (when the feds mandate runs out). EVDO phones never seem to have analog backup, for some reason.

There's probably some good technical explanation for that.. but fact...

And verizon is not going to do anything to combat it, they have converted, they do not even offer analog plans anymore. I am sure when they are allowed to do so, they will shut their analog down. Your major carriers have spent a lot of money converting to digital, and they are not going to keep maintaining analog any longer then they are required to, cutting out that expense.
