I was just wondering, what is the range of a cellphone tower? Is it the same for GSM and CDMA?

Thanks, In Advance..

I don't know about GSM and I am sure many of the very techncal people out there have a better answer but I always though a digital signal travelled about 5 miles, give or take based on topography, electical interference, and structural interference. Of course, my apologies to the very technical crowd in hear if I am completely wrong 🙂

no you're just about right. Digi towers are kinda short-range. Analog towers can stretch for like 10+ and tend to penetrate physical obstructions better.

Yah! You don't know how happy that makes me that for just a moment I got to join the tech crowd and be right! 😁

Towers using the 800/850 bands travel slightly further than towers using the 1900 band. Which is why carriers that use primarily cellular band put up fewer towers than those who use primarily the PCS band. Where I live, Verizon Wireless uses both the Cellular & PCS bands. I believe the former GTE Mobile used the cellular band and Ameritech Cellular used the PCS band. I only wish I knew which band the 500' tower near my home uses. That's another factor, height plays a role in how far out the signal goes.

i was told cdma towers get 15-25 mile range sometimes less given the topography and penetration of the bandwidth.

gsm towers i was told get up to 30 miles somestimes less given topography and penetration of bandwidth. the 1900mhz band has a shorter or weaker signal if alot o penetration is needed.
