I have been a cell user for years, long before VW was on the scene in the south east, in fact I became a customer of thiers when they bought or merged with BAM. Over all that time using cell phones I have never been as pissed as I am now. What has got me going is the phone selection available from VW and constant lies from thier sales reps. You can get tons of gadgets and crap but you can't find a plain solid reliable phone. So here I sit stuck with my old worn-out startac that thier idiots try to tell me doesn't work as well as the new phones, but at the same time I find friends and co-workers who are also with VW are amazed that my phone works in places where thiers does not. Then thier sales rep attempted to run off with stats about "the ...

Don't get me wrong, James. Yeah, startac was great, but obsolete battery, no e911 support (it's your own safety), the WORST design of the antenna (how many times have you replaced it so far?).

If you are looking for a simple phone: 325 by Motorola is a great phone for you. Excellent reception, analog support, speakerphone, new, more reliable charging port. Read the reviews here. I would recommend and extended battery, it's a very smart investment anyway.

As for Asia part, they are always gonna have the most jaw-dropping phones. It's the cellphone nature.

Can I get Hi-cap battery that I can easliy change with backup batteries (not having to take the phone apart first)? Sure it prolly lasts longer when close to a digital tower, but what about analog in the sticks with no power source for days? Some of the places I go I may not see any power source for days, yet I have coverage, with the ST I just thow a few batteries in the bag and no problem. Can I get an external charger? I really hate plugging any phone in no matter how good the connector, I would rather just swap batteries. I have had and used many other newer phones, this is not a matter of not wanting to let go of the ST, in fact I want to because it is worn-out and the batteries are slowly loosing thier power. It is just that I want a g...

And one more thing, I just want a simple ring, the ring tones thing has about hit my last nerve. Sure put what ever you want on yours but I just want a simple ring for crying out loud. I have had phones pitched to me that don't even have that. Oh, and about the asian phones, yeah they got tons of toys, but guess what, you can get exactly the kind of phone I am asking for over there, simple, basic, reliable, TOUGH, NEW, and made by the same companies we buy from here, but the #@!#&%$ phone companies here will not buy and stock them.

James.

Well, v325 is pretty new. As far as the charger goes, I honestly don't know if you can buy a charger for a battery.

The rings are standard moto, but you can download the original startac ring into the new phone, if it is such a big deal for you.

WOW! Simple phones in Asia? WHERE? 🤣

Hi James,

There are some options based on what you're looking for.. some may be better than others.

As suggested, the Moto V325 is a good new phone.. not a lot of frills, but good and solid. It does offer the VZ Navigator service (GPS directions from the phone)if that sounds like something you'd use. It doesn't have a battery only charger yet, but it may be available in the future. With any of the Moto phones, you will have to take the back plate off to replace the battery.

Another option to look at would be the LG 4650. This is a tri-mode phone (digital and analog support) with a great speaker phone on it. the beauty of the LG phones is that they have a battery only charger available ($24.99) to charge the spares out of the phone...

The Startac was a bad ass phone in 1996; you will never find a phone like that ever again. I had one when verizon was called Airtouch and can appreciate your love for it. I would agree with kvazzz on his recommendation for you. It's time to let go, you can love another 🙂

james....justkeep in mind...if u let go, u can never activate the ST on your line again...FCC mandates all phone activated need to have e911 GPS. the ST doesnt so once deact...cannot reactivate. it may be doneby a tech but they're not supposed to and can get in trouble. good luck in your findings.

ps - all cell phones come with the standard ring option (like 2 or 3) so u dont need to have a fancy one.
