Does anyone know if we can disable that beeping sound that people hear when they call in when you're on the phone with someone else?

No. Why? Are you cheating on someone, and don't want them to know you're on the phone? I can't possibly think of another reason to give a crap.

Actually you can by suscribing to ringback tones. A second person calling you will not hear the beep if you have ringback tones.

No not cheating...its just annoying sometimes when ure on the phone and you feel obligated to click over instead of just calling the person back later. Whats ringback tones?

Sign up for ringback and select standard ring tone as default ringer. that will get rid of the beep. Will cost you 99 cents a month.

...or you can just remove the call waiting feature completely. That way if you're on a call and someone calls you, they'll get a busy signal instead. I hope this helps 😉

I really find it a shame that not one rep knew the answer to this one. Sad.

Sorry about that man. All you have to do is give a call to CS. Ask them that you need to have the "call waiting distinct ringback" disabled. That is the name of the feature that give that tone when someone calls you when you are on the phone.

The reason that the CS reps are unaware of this is because they have no control over it. When you call them and request to have it removed, they will have to call to tech support and tech support will disable the feature.

Some reps may tell you that there is no way to get rid of it when you call in. If that happens, just ask them to call tech support and ask. It takes 5 seconds to disable.

Again, I'm sorry...

The other thing you can do is dial *70, this disables call waiting so the person calling will either get a busy signal or their call will go directly to voicemail.

The original poster wanted to get rid of the annoying call waiting tone that you hear while you are talking to someone else, not the tone the caller hears when you are on the phone.

I am 100% positive that Tech support can take off that sound.....

Just call customer Service and let them know you want the call waiting sound removed ....

they will call their tech support and have it removed.... Not a problem at all

You cannot do that. It's not a FEATURE.

Mary,

It is a feature, and it can be disabled. It's just difficult to find someone who understands what you are talking about. I just had it done. See my post.

Is it a feature you can turn off in the switch, becasue it is not a feature in the billing system(i.e. vision, i2k)

Sorry, I'm not "tech" enough to know the answer, although I suspect in the switch, from the terms the VZW tech used. Something was mentioned about not being able to disable the feature in all switching areas.

Hope this helps.

I tried this yesterday and they were able to take the ring off but it also took off my call waiting. I still want call waiting but I just want the person calling me to get a ring, not the ring/beep that happens when I'm on the phone. And I asked for it correctly and got transferred to a tech and it still didn't work.

Any suggestions?

Exactly, like I said before, it's not a feature that you can remove. The only way to remove it is to remove call waiting!!!!

It is a switch feature, on some switches. Depends of if it's an HLR switch or Lucent. Don't remember witch one works though.

Mary,

The only thing I can tell you is that it is apparently a regional feature. It seems there are actually physically different types of switches used in different areas of the country. I happen to live in an area where it could be disabled, because of the types of switches in service, and it seems you do not. As I posted the other day, I now have that disabled and if someone calls when I'm already on the phone, I hear the beep but the caller does not.

I just got off the phone with VZW cust. svc. As mentioned in this thread, the CSR had no idea what "call waiting distinctive ringback" was. She put me on hold and called a tech. The CSR came back to say it wasn't possible to disable that in all switching areas, and ultimately transferred me to tech support. The tech was very helpful, disabled the "call waiting distinctive ringback" feature, and called me back on my cell -- I called in from a landline -- to make sure everything worked properly. Good news for those of us who use our phones a lot for business.
