Qwest Communications' stock price reached a 52-week high yesterday as speculation about Qwest being a takeover target continued. Verizon Communications has been mentioned as a possible buyer, although it is believed that some private-equity firms could make a move.

VZW still has a bitter taste in its mouth from Qwest driving up the price of MCI. However, they won't let AT&T get it!

No, because the original intent of the breakup of Ma Bell was to promote competition and give local non-Bell telephone companies a chance in the marketplace. Today there are so many alternatives to the traditional landline phone service that lack of competition and monopolization are no longer issues.

Think wireless, cable phone services, and VoIP. You have more options now than ending up saying "oh, well I guess I have to sign up with AT&T if I want to be able to use a telephone."

well it is the same concept/idea/scenerio, however this way, it is a bundled service and having other networks; such as wireless, cable, wireline and others.

i dont think the FCC really cares at this point.

Quest as a whole, or in part? Remember, the whole company is hugely in debt. The landline portion has only 5 or so major markets and all of the open country to cover. Remember how the old AT&T ended? First there was the internet, then wireless, then landline. There has been speculation for a few years that Qwest will be broken up that way. But Qwest's overall debt is huge, and their Wireless is poor. And they run DSL internet...

This is on top of news that Verizon may have requested to buy back all their stock from Vodophone.

While it may not be a substantial addition, Qwest would give Verizon coverage in some areas that Vz currently is not strong in, such as OK, KS and MT. I don't know that this addition would be worth the divestiture of other markets needed to complete such a deal. It would have an advantage. Likely, if any carrier can get the Qwest Wireless assets and do so for a song, it could be a reasonable coverage addition and a net cash gain for an ailing Qwest.

As for Vodaphone, not going anywhere, while Verizon Communications might want to buy the remainder of Vodaphone, they aren't going anywhere and are no longer in need of cash after divesting some far east assets.
