SMS devices and plans.....how much would you pay?

DeathAwaitsUsAll

I was just wondering, if Verizon (or any otehr carrier) came out with a SMS device ( a device that was a "phone" but could not be used to make calls, just send texts msg's, like a portable Instant Messenger), first off would any of you be interested in such a device (I would as I text more than I call any more) and two how much woul you pay for a data package with like X amount of texts, with free Verizon to Verizon texts, or even possibly an unlimited text option? Wat do you think would be fair, or what would be the norm, based on phone minute packages already? Just a thought.

the text only phone? eh, doesn't really work for me, but it might have a place in the marketplace. As far as unlimited text to ANYONE (not everybody is in, and I live in Madison, WI where the cell services are fairly evenly split across the four majors) Verizon is way behind on the unlimited text packages, just having IN unlimited is not enough. $15-20 is fair for an unlimited package, thats what most other companies charge. Hell at tmobile you can pay $10 for a family of four to have unlimited (would cost $80 at vzn, and its only unlimited IN). thats just ridiculous. Get with it verizon, texting is too popular now a days to not offer an unlimited package.

I've often thought of that and wonder why they haven't tried something yet. I think it would be kinda neat. I couldn't see me paying anymore than I already do for the text pckgs though

its verizon we are talking about here. the word free doesn't exist in the company manual.

however, the unlimited txt option would be nice though. sometime its alot faster just to drop a quick txt. i end up txting more too. easier and less private. mostly its just fun to get quick notes from friends.

Well look at the Side Kick by T-Mobile, or the V phone (Lg 9800) from Verizon. Both of these phones, although still phones, were made to make texting more viable. Why wouldn't they just make an SMS device? not necessarily a phone, but something between a phone and a pager. Since their is really nothing out atm (that I can think of) that is just an SMS device, I just compared it to a phone that does not make or recieve calls. I mean, even if it cost me say $150 for the device, and say $30 a month for the "coverage" of Unlimited Text (which including all my intant messaging, i.e. MSN, AIM, YIM, ICQ, mIRC, etc etc) I would def be all about it. Who could this item work for? Kids who like to know wats goin on in school, I mean u can't mak...

just like a PSP, an I-Pod, a GameBoy, Pagers and a cell Phone that is all in one is a bad idea, I am sure no one would ever be interested in a a SMS only device. Please troll somewhere else. seriously guy. Not all ppl live through Voice Communication anymore, some of us know how to type and read. 😑

Yes SMS has a market and it’s with Teen Mobile (sidekick) the large majority of ppl with cell phones use it for voice communication. Live it up guy it’s your stupid thread.

Yes I agree with you, most ppl who have cell phones still use them as phones for Voice Calling/Messagin, but that is not my question, nor is it regarding "do you text or call more" my question is for those out there who DO text MORE than call, would u buy such a device, how much would you pay for the device, and how much would you be willing to pay each month, and for those who do TEXT MORE THAN THEY CALL, do you think in general this is a good idea or realistic concept. Nothing to do with cell phones, forget cell phones, this is about SMS. Thank you, sorry if I confused anyone. I am not stupid I know phones are gonna be used as phones. 🀣

Death,

No one thinks you are stupid, but you tend to think about things in a very narrow world. Yes, the idea is feasible and I'm sure some people would sign up. But now way will any major carrier do this...why? because they know that people who want to text alot will just buy the cheapest amount of minutes and add an unlimited text package. this difference in price would probably be minimal, and atleast this way you could use the "texting device" as a phone as well.

Cell phone companies are all about average revenue per consumer, and this wouldn't really help the bottom line at all.

Oh by the way, you another reason why THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN, ITS ALREADY BEEN DONE!!! Remember 2 way pagers? yeah well, what the heck do you th...

they might still be here...but they have a very, very niche market. Which is why verizon would never begin pushing them again. They might sell them, but I bet you most sales reps don't even know that they do...but if it works for you, good luck.

Verizon just launched a plan like this the other day. It is marketed toward those who are hearing impaired, but can be sold to anyone. it costs 39.99 and includes 100 voice minutes and unlimited text to anyone. You can use any phone you would like with this plan, I would reccomend the lg 9800.

Interesting, is there a link to this new plan? something I can look at or do I need to call CC to find out about it? Its really open to everyone cuz I would do that for sure. And maybe 2 way pagers weren't big when they came out, but its a whole new generation. Like I said a lot more ppl text. It could come back, who knows. 😎
