Seems CDMA is adding GSM...hmmmmmm I wonder why GSM is not adding CDMA capability....

Qualcom in doing this is basically saying set, game , match. We give up...GSM is the winner.

Let the spinning begin!!!! "We keep working for ya"

See? "Even though we trained our sales reps to speak ill of GSM, We are adding the inferior GSM capability because we HAVE to in oder to stay in the game internationally, lest we be the red headed stepchild of the cellular universe.......we give in......We are sorry, Please stay with us. We promise our expensive
flea market branded phones will have more features.........soon.....as you know we test our phone sooooo vigorously and many...

Kingfrog, give it up. If GSM is so great then why is a form of CDMA going to replace it worldwide? ATTWS and Cingular did not put in GSM in order to stay with it. They are on their way to WCDMA. They call it UMTS so that no one will know that it is CDMA. As far as Qualcomm spinning anything it is Cingular which is spinning GSM, an antiquated system from the closed minded European governments who locked out competition. The European carriers absolutely hate GSM and want to go to CDMA-2000 but the arrogance of their governments will not allow it. They must use WCDMA which nobody has made work except for on paper. Qualcomm will go to Europe, bail out WCDMA from the fools at Ericsson, Nokia and Siemens and claim final victory.
Why Cingular and...

Actually, WCDMA has been implemented in other countries and IS functional. It is not "on paper" but on networks.

As you most likely know, it is not the air interface that defines a technology, but the core. WCDMA is a CDMA air interface with a GSM core. Therefore it is NOT a form of CDMA, or truly a form of GSM, but a hybrid with GSM at its heart.
Were Cingular to implement a true CDMA solution, it would require significant equipment changes to the infrastructure. This is not the case with the WCDMA rollout.

That is impossible, you cannot have a time division data layer and a code division air interface. The channel width and spacing are GSM but the data layer and the air interface is CDMA. WCDMA is the upgrade to CDMA from GSM, nothing more, nothing less. It is a different form of CDMA than Sprint and Verizon use. Neither superior nor inferior, just different. What I refered to as a paper network is that all of the advanced features do not yet work satisfactorily. At this time it also cannot be made to work on the cellular band. It works on the PCS band ok.

Then read this and see if you still think its not possible.

The technology on which 3GSM* services will be delivered is built around a core GSM network with a Wideband-CDMA (W-CDMA) air interface, which has been developed as an open standard by operators in conjunction with the 3GPP standards development organisation. Already over 85% of the world's network operators have chosen 3GSM's* underlying technology platform to deliver their third generation services.

Any questions, professor?

here you go again with your MISINFO. IDIOT. GSM IS BASED UPON TDMA. However you are wrong about being "stuck" with anything. Cingular has the money to go with ANY technology it chooses. It chose GSM because of its MANY ADVANTAGES over CDMA. Voice quality, better phones, LESS EXPENSIVE PHONES, phones made by reputable companies, really good data speeds, etc. Not to mention GSM is PROVEN WORLD WIDE. To the idiot who thinks Cingular is calling wcdma umts to hide the fact it's cdma, you're an idiot, too. wcdma is more compatible with GSM than CDMA or CDMA2000. The Europeans called it UMTS long before it was ever used. Once again UMTS being a PROVEN technology, as opposed to CDMA2000 being proven by no one. Looks good on paper, but if they have a...
