Reps: Changing contract Q's
I just started using a cell phone last July (05). I bought the family plan with 2 phones and 500 minutes. I don't buy any additional services (e.g., text, get it now, pics, etc.)
Now, I'd like to add my son. I figured I'd have to extend my contract and that's not a problem. But I've been told I need to create a NEW contract for 700 minutes per month. While the prevailing wisdom is that a teenager talks on the phone all the time, this kid doesn't fit that mold. In fact, he probably talks less than 20 minutes per month and my husband and I only use 150 minutes of our 500 minute allotment.
So in deciding whether to add him to my plan or keep him on hi...

Could a Verizon rep please help me understand how the contract renewal/upgrade works?

I can ADD a line to an existing family plan without being forced to upgrade to the 700 minute plan. (Which is exactly what I want to do.)
That means I would STILL have all the features of my current plan (e.g., free IN calling, no roaming, free nights and weekends, etc.) The only difference is that while my contract would expire on July 07, my son's contract (which is really based on my family plan) would end in March 08. Probably that means I would have to extend my contract to March 08, too, which is fine.
The 500 minute plan is no longer offered.
When I tried to upgrade at my local Verizon franchise AND when I tried to add a line online, I was not offered the 500 minute plan (it's not eve...

If the time comes for him to no longer be on your share plan, you can authorize him to take responsibility of his line. Once you do that he can get his line under his name with a single line plan.
online may not get it but in store they are shafting you. yesterday when you posted this question i was in mid activation of someone looking to do the same as you. and i'm in-store 😲 😳 .
So my next question is: If I stay with my current plan, at the end of two years when the plan is up, can I renew it even though Vz doesn't offer it anymore? If that's the case, then I should probably make my kid keep his tracfone because that way I can stay at 500 minutes the rest of my life. OTOH, if I'm going to have to upgrade at the end of two years anyway, then I might as well change now.
Thanks to everyone for helping me understand this.

It's very easy to add a line to your current plan. Just walk in, "I'd like to add a line to my 500 minute share plan please." If they say no, tell them you'll conduct your business elsewhere and walk. I'll bet they'll find a way to make it happen when they see the sale walking out the door.
1.) You can not upgrade with an equipment discount unless it is on a current plan. Sometimes on some of the older local digital choice plans or special corporate discount plans like for GE, the system will allow you to process, however the 500 minute family share plan is not in the point of sale system, if you wish to keep that plan you may, but you must pay full retail price for the phone.
2.) Sales people make NO extra money by upgrading you to a 700 minute family share plan and adding a line as opposed to adding the line on the 500 minute plan.
3.) Customer Service reps (not all of them) need to familiarize themselves with the company's M&P's and stop telling customers they can get whatever ...

Completely Erroneous on all accounts.

Why should anyone need to change their pricing? There are plans that aren't eligible for upgrades at all such as the save plans but I don't upgrade those. If someone wants to stay on old and busted pricing, let them.
But what do I know.. My year end PA had me averaging 9.2 in QA and passed 98% of my transactional audits. I probably don't know anything
National customer service can get it authorized for you they work with a different system then the corporate stores and are authorized to do what it takes to keep customers happy within reason.
Sales reps like myself in coporate store do not make any more or less wether its on a old contract or new. So Vatoth0 you need to stick with what you know and stop generalizing the people who make your vestments possible.
Phoebe3 as far as your old contract if you decide to keep your son off your plan at the end of your term you can be renewed in a corprate store allthough begrudgeingly by some Rsr's out there however our internal M&P's allow for old family shares to be renewed on a new two year however you will not...
