Verizon charges for SMS. What a ripoff!!

I have an XV6700 Windows Mobile 5 phone with unlimited data plan. I use the wireless ActiveSync feature with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to sync email, contacts, and calendar to my device when it is not in the USB cradle. For those of you who do not know how this works, when a new email comes into my account, the Exchange Server sends an email to [email protected] which sends an SMS message to my phone telling it to initiate an ActiveSync. Verizon charges me one text message each time my phone receives this SMS message. I called Verizon and I kept getting transferred back and forth between customer service and tech support. A half an hour later it still wasn't resolved and it was determined that there was no way for them to stop charging...

if the 10 cents is breaking your bank you can call customer care have them just block txt messaging all together, you wont get charges for messages anymore and you can just sync when you want to check your email.

midnightST, think about this, imagine how many of those 10 cents he/she will get charged before telling someone that 10 cents will break someone bank, you are completely idiot and ignorant for your respond regardless. for me, 10 cents per message x 20 messages/day x 30 days, that $60/month. I don't even know why you are responding, i feel wasting my time reading these types of message from your type of personality.

I'm sorry that you have not gotten the correct information thus far. Verizon is currently working on a fix that will eliminate these text message charges for your email delivery. In the meantime, we will add a free 2000 text message package to your account to compensate for these messages. If for some reason this is not enough, we will then do a manual credit. If when you call into customer care and the rep does not know about this, please ask them to put you on hold and call WDTS for the proper code that needs to be added to your account. We will also need to issue a credit for all text messages on previous invoices due to our error. Again, I apologize for this inconvenience.

Any of you other VZ reps out there notice the difference between a professional and helpful response instead of the usual insulting ones consumers get to these types of complaints? These types of responses help keep and recruit customers instead of driving them to alternatives.

Thank you for informing me of this. It just didn't seem right that I was getting charged for these messages. Twenty to thirty emails a day plus conventional text messaging can add up quick. I will take your advice and call customer service again.

Having never heard of the problem before I thought it was an isolated incident with you're account. And then when tenuredvzrep came up with this magical 2000 free text plan to solve the problem I thought he was full of it. But nope, he's absolutely right, I looked it up. They created a free 2000 text plan just for such a problem. Kudos to you tenuredvzwrep.

Check in the 6700 forum for registry edit as well, with this you can change some functions, the one most important with your problem is the delivery notification text. I think you can turn that off with your registry edit so it stops sending you notifications through text for email and text confirmations.

That is not what is happening. I do not receive a conventional text message that pops up on my phone. My phone receives a signal, the same way it receives a SMS message, and initiates an ActiveSync. My phone doesn't notify me that I received this message. The only reason that I know that I'm being charged a text message for it is because when I do #DATA from my phone my total received messages are absurdly high.

I took your advice and called customer service again and explained to them exactly what you said to do in your post. The customer service rep transferred me to a tier 2 tech support rep. The tech support rep was well aware of the situation and informed me that I should not be charged, he then proceded to transfer me back to another customer service rep since he does not have access to make changes on my account. However, he failed to brief the customer service rep on the situation and she had no idea what I was talking about so he we are back at square one. She placed me on hold for over 15 minutes so I hung up. This time I was on the phone for over an hour and still nothing has been accomplished. I am having a hard time understanding ...

I'm aware of the package that can be added but only because someone here mentioned it. This isn't something cusomer service reps are briefed on because it's not something they are supposed to deal with. It's bad enough as it is that people will add expired text plans, recurring credits, credits entered incorrectly, and offer things that are completly not available in general. If this were something all CS reps knew about there would be people that don't even have pda's with this and then they'd have 2000 txts for free. This option only is available to customers that are syncing with an Exchange Server so even in the business department it doesn't come up that much since Exchange is so expensive.

I believe the feature is called PDA/SMS 20...

What market are you in? WDTS should have been able to add the feature to your account. It is feature code that gives you a 2000 sms allowance. I have added the feature to many of my PDA customer for this exact reason.

This is now the third time that I have called regarding this issue. The customer service rep that I spoke to this time was extremely rude and proceeded to tell me that this is not a known issue throughout Verizon and that there is nothing that she can do. I had her transfer me to WDTS and the rep I spoke to there was also not aware of this issue. The only thing in agreement that they are all in is that there is no such thing as a feature code that gives 2000 sms allowance. Does anyone have any other suggestions to help me get this resolved? If not, I'm breaking my contract and leaving Verizon. This small and easily correctable problem has turned into a major headache.

3 phone calls and later and over 3 hours of conversation with customer service and WDTS I finally spoke to someone who knew what I was talking about and was able to add the 2000 sms allowance. What a damn hassle that was. Thank all of you who provided me with suggestions on getting this resolved.
