Can someone please explain to me what OBEX is and what benefits it provides the user? I see Verizon is offering it on their phones, but I have no clue.

OBEX is the bluetooth profile that allows direct transfer of data between two phones. If you want to send eachother ringtones, pics, or videos, you can do it over a localized bluetooth network rather than through the carrier-offered MMS services.
