SIM on CDMA question

Got a quick question about something. Does anyone know was there ever a talk about putting SIM cards on the Verizon or CDMA network? It was just a question do to the fact I just got a new VZW phone and had to go through the pain staking process of transfering all my number over one by one. And yes I know I could have went to VZW store and paid the 5 or 10 dollars to let them do it, but just didnt feel like going out there.

A friend who has a T-Mobile phone which of course is on GSM was shocked to find out that VZW didnt have SIM cards. which I am sure everyone knows you can just pop it out and pop it in your new phone.

Does anyone know of any plans in the future for this? it seems like it would make life much easier. Or is this just ...

VZW does offer a few phones that have sim cards in them. Unfortunately they are global phones. They can be purchased and used on a CDMA network - then once you go overseas - you can switch the phone to GSM mode. The phones are:

Motorola a840 - $399.99
Samsung a795 - $349.99

This is the 2 year pricing on the phones. They can not be ordered in store or online. You must contact global services at: 800-711-8300. For more information you can go to verizonwireless.com and do a search on global phones.

I hope this helps.

Download Backup assistant. It will keep a record of your contacts online so if your phone is lost, you still have them all. If you lose a GSM phone, the SIM card would have been in it and all your contacts are lost anyway.

That is because it requires feature changes on your account to go from 1x to EVDO. Call in and they won't charge you. They have never charged me when the website won't process the change.

The only thing that is weak is your incessant bitching!

They actually have never charged me either....I've changed my ESN online once...every other time I've always called them and I asked them if they charge the $20 fee and some say they never have, others say they won't this time....So what I have found out is you just have to ask....most of the time they won't charge it!

There is a “SIM” card type system for CDMA developed by Qualcomm about five years ago called “R-UIM” (I can’t remember what the acronym means). I believe that it is common among the Asian CDMA carriers. My understanding is that Nokia phones sold by VZW even have a space for a R-UIM card slot.

I doubt Verizon will ever adopt the R-UIM unless forced to. They are not known for adopting systems that give their customers greater control.

No US CDMA carrier has yet to adopt R-UIM for their phones, and unless the FCC forced it upon the CDMA carriers, they're not likely to adopt it. A Samsung phone I saw on phonearena.com showed a phone that uses both SIM & R-UIM. It uses CDMA 800/1900 & GSM 900/1800/1900. The FCC has approved the phone, but the phone won't likely be released in the states because of the R-UIM & SIM slots. CDMA carriers here in the states don't use R-UIM, and GSM won't release it here because it doesn't have the 850 band, for carriers that use 850 only, or for carriers like Cingular that uses both 850 & 1900, and the phone only has 1900. Plus GSM carriers wouldn't want a phone that can be used on both CDMA & GSM in the states.

1)I've always had the store vounteer to do this for free, but it takes 10 minutes.
More importantly,
2)If you have a phone that has Get it now, you can download the Backup assistant, and keep your numbers stored on their server. Changing phones takes about 3 minutes of time running the application to retrieve all your numbers. Also if you phone ever just dies, or is destroyed, you can get a new phone anywhere and re-load all your numbers in minutes. All for $1.99/month. To me with 450 numbers, it's invaluable.

SIM cards. (GSM)If I'm not mistaken, someone can steal your phone, pull the sim card, and use your phone, sell it on Ebay, etc.
With Verizon, if that happens, your phone is ueless to anyone.

Maybe you missed my post. Or maybe you're too ignorant to accept that VZW is the better carrier. Either way if a SIM card is that important to someone, VZW does off phones with SIM cards.
