So I lost my rubber piece on the charging port of the phone. Did I need that anyway, and if so, where do I get another one? The phone is new, but I think I would have lost that eventually.

not really needed, unless you carry it in a pocket or purse... if you just belt-clip it you're fine... Just make sure there's nothing in the port before you shove the charger into it is all..

What happens if I carry it in a pocket or purse? I don't do the belt clip thing.

Yeah we have a little cup full of them for customers with OCD. You don't need the DAMN RUBBER PLUG! I try to remember to remove it and throw it away when I'm activating new phones.

also if you have any problems with phone and have been in a high humidity area, expect to be told that warranty is no good because of water damage. the plug is lgs way of keeping moisture out of phone. so with out plug in,you have a 99% chance of warranty being voided because of water damage. and all vzw reps can say other wise. but explain how so many people get turned down on warranty on phone because of water damage. especially when phone has not been used in rain or dropped in water in anyway.

because people LIE about how the phones get liquid damaged!!!!!! I'm not saying they all do, but 99.9999 percent of the time when I ask "has your phone been in contact with moisture of ANY kind?" They alwasy so no. Every time. plus the indicator on the phone and battery aren't all we(techs and CSRs) have to indicate how a phone has gotten wet. If the indicators are show slight moisture and there is no corrosion in the charging port or on the board, I think we should atleast probe a little further. I might swap it out.
