Removal of Analog Towers?

Does anybody know when Verizon is going to get rid of their analog towers? Someone on this forum said that they were going to replace them with digital, and the VZW tech guy at our kiosk near my house said that they aren't going to be replaced, if so, then wouldn't Verizon lose a lot of business because the digital area isn't that much and some people rely on the analog system?

I don't think that VzW is neccessarily planning to get rid on Analog towers, though government offices I'm sure are gearing to get rid of the old analog system & I'm sure EVERY company will eventually have analog services phased out in time. That may not be for a few years yet though.

It seems more likely to me that the towers will be converted to whatever technology is current for that carrier by implementing equipment upgrades at the tower level where that is possible. Analog WILL eventually be phased out. I heard something a while back about starting to scale it back in 2006, but not sure how true that is.

Cell-phone users in those areas who have bought top-of-the-line phones report numerous problems.

I'm certain that its for ALL carriers. Though it is pretty much heresy until such time as the FCC puts out the "Official" mandate.

I heard this discussion 3 years ago. Analog is what most of the Michigan Upper Peninsula IS! We deer hunt there in November, and would enjoy digital but analog is better than nothing. Generally speaking the service up there was very poor. Last year no matter who's signal your getting did not work well. There were vast areas where the phone banner states "No Service".

VZW as far as I know- but I believe the FCC is pushing most carriers to convert to all digital networks around the same time frame.
