We're going to see if we can find it cheaper somewhere else

Ok, So I just had a very nice elderly couple in.

They walk in the store. I say hi and ask how they are doing, they reply "Oh, I sure hope you can help us, we travel and need a phone that will work in a certian place" They then pull out thier 2 foot tall atlas and open it up to a remote place in South Carolina, I show them on the brocure that it is indeed covered, I even went into VZW Map and showed the the particular city they were traveling to. Sure enough it has great coverage.

They are very happy becasue they will be able to make phone calls and will have reliable coverage when traveling. I proceed to show them the phones, I agreed to sell them a 3300 for free on a 1 year contract. The husband loves the phone and so does his wife, ...

it's probably better that they left anyways. in my experience, they sound like the type of customer that become real PIA's. it's better to let them go become someone elses headache. 😁

We send out letters to customers who are eligable for upgrades (thanks to crazyeaglefan for that idea, it works great) 😁 .

I just got a call from a customer who said "Hi, I got your letter in the mail, so I went to the corporate store to do it, but I dont like the phone, the wait was really long, and they were rude> Can I please bring the phone back to you and exchange it there?"

I say "no mam' you will haveto take it back there since that is where you got it at"

she said "why, your much closer to where I live"

me: "well why dod you go over there then?"

her: "bacause that is where I always go to, and you letter just reminded me that I could go get a new phone"

me: "once again I am sorry mam' I cannont help you since you di...

I understand your frustration, but what's wrong with people wanting to shop around? Aren't they SUPPOSED to be a little suspicious when a sales person tells them "our product is the best, and this is the best deal you can get"?

They're committing to spending $480. That's a lot of money to some people.

I would ridicule the person who DOESN'T shop around some for something this costly.

So all my time and effort is worth absolutly nothing? If somebody spends an hour going out of their way to help you, its ok for you to just slap them in the face and tell them "thanks we appreciate your time and effort, but its not worth our money and we are going to go somewhere else to save a buck?

Thats the average consumer mentality

I know, I realize its jsut part of the game, but its still very rude to tell a slaesman that, if your going to go shop around, then just tell the guy "thanks, we will probably be back, but were going to go home and talk it over"

Even if you have no intention of coming back, it is still much nicer to say it that way instead of, "thanks for all your time and effort, but we dont really care about any of it, we just want to save a dollar"

I think what you experienced is called "sales", you may have to do this once in a while in your position. You could always go to Walmart where people just put stuff on the counter and pay for it without shoping around.

The only thing I could think of at that point would be still let them walk but ask them for a commitment. 1st of all, VZW would be their best way to go because they have the coverage and the mobile to mobile with all their family. I would ask them directly. I would ask, "Since you feel that I was so helpful, promise me something. Promise that you will take the amount of help I gave you into consideration before you purchased. If you find someone that was as helpful and still gave a better price, then so be it. But if not, do you agree that you will come back and purchase your service from me?" Word it any way you want, but get them to say yes. Odds are when someone leaves your store you will never see them again...but you never know. ...

Wfine - I really do mean this, when I say that I have experienced the same frustration in the past. I hope you won't mind some advice that might help you. I'm going to offer some bullet-points you might gain something from:

1. Don't take it personally, its just business.

2. SW,SW,SW, Next! = Some Will, Some Won't, So What, Next! Learn from your mistakes here, but don't beat yourself up over it - Move on!

3. See if you can find a book called; "You Can't Teach a Kid to Ride a Bike at a Seminar" by David Sandler - look on Amazon. If you can get a copy, read it, read it again, then read it again. Sales is just a game we play to get us where we want to be in life. If you can't find that, start reading sales books by anyone - Tom Ho...

I really agree with #5. I even go as far as asking how much of a factor price is and if it is, I focus my presentation on that.

I may be wrong but I think the only people who care about service over price are those that have been burned by their bargain hunting ways in the past (rebate not honored, poor quality product, bad customer service)
