I'm in the UK at the moment but will be returning to my home in Mt. Shasta, CA in a couple of weeks. Verizon is just now offering plans there and I'm interested in signing up with them or US Cellular. My stomping grounds are the entire West Coast , Idaho and Montana. US Cellular would work but I might too often violate their 50% policy regarding using non-USCC towers in a given month. I understand Verizon doesn't have such a policy. I cannot decipher from the Verizon site whether I can get a plan under which I can travel in the mentioned areas and be free of roaming and long distance charges. I want to be able to make and receive a call and not have to worry about either. Presumably I want a national plan, maybe 400-600 minutes, but the fine...

You will be safe with any of the Americas Choice plans. VZW has done away with domestic roaming. I have customers here in the Pacific Northwest that use their phones all over Idaho and Montana without any problems. If you go with US Cellular I doubt you will have sufficient coverage in Idaho and Montana and could rack up some significant roaming charges.

Thank you. US Cellular claims to have a roaming partnership with Verizon, which I have somewhat confirmed last time I was in ID and MT, but I'm concerned in going over the 50% allowed non-USCC tower usage. I just don't want to have to think about it. Does Verizon's doing away with roaming also pertain to long distance charges and to incoming calls? In other words, I can just use my phone in any manner and as long as I don't talk over my plan minutes I won't incur extra charges?

correct. and VZw allows you to change plans at any time even mid month if you need more mins we can make it retroactive so you dont get hit with overage, and tools are avail so you can monitor your minutes for free during the month. if you travel i think the choice is obvious VZW has the nations most reliable wireless network and does not have roaming stipulations.

definately verizon! I have seen too many angry customers who have switched to verizon because of uscc having so much roaming!

there is no roaming charges as long as you are in the continental US, Alaska, Hawaii, or Puerto Rico.
there is no long distance charges as long as you are calling a US number.
the only way you would get roaming charges while in the US is if you were right on the border and were pulling a canadian/mexican tower and in which case you would rely on your phone to notify you of roaming.
